Who Are Abigail’s Footsteps?
Abigail’s Footsteps is a baby loss charity who help parents and families whilst they are going through the most harrowing time of their lives. They provide support for families who have experienced neonatal loss, miscarriage, fetal anomaly or stillbirth. They offer in-person counselling services in Kent, Surrey, South London and Essex.
They also have a beautiful bereavement garden for parents and families to come and find peace whilst grieving the loss of their loved one. For healthcare professionals, Abigail’s Footsteps offer bereavement training. This includes virtual training sessions to help those working with bereaved families to communicate and support them during this immensely difficult time.
Abigail’s Footsteps offer an invaluable support system for bereaved families, both as a means of direct support through professional counselling and by educating healthcare professionals so that they can provide the best service possible to bereaved parents and families.
What Type of Training do Abigail’s Footsteps Offer?
Bereavement Training: Abigail’s Footsteps have made a series of two short films about the loss of a baby and bereavement, The Deafening Silence and Say My Baby’s Name. These powerful productions are then used as a tool for training healthcare professionals, helping them to be more aware of the experiences of bereaved families. It also helps to raise awareness of the 14 babies every single day in the UK who suffer stillbirth or neonatal death.
Professional Reflective Occupational Practice: This helps professionals to learn how to care for and support bereaved families whilst managing their own feelings and emotions regarding child loss. It is done through a series of 6 sessions, and is designed to support healthcare workers who often deal with traumatic events such as the loss of a baby, and help them to care for their own mental wellbeing as well as that of bereaved families.
What Support for Families do Abigail’s Footsteps Offer?
Counselling: Abigail’s Footsteps offer counselling for baby loss in Kent, Surrey, South London and Essex. They are suitable for any parents or families who have experienced the devastation of losing a baby. Whether it be in the womb or post-birth, these sessions can help parents and children to work through their emotions and grieve in their own ways.
Bereavement Garden: The bereavement garden is located in Rochester Cathedral in Kent, and is a place where bereaved families can go for quiet contemplation, to grieve their loss and sit together and enjoy the serene atmosphere. Created as a quiet space for grieving families, the bereavement garden is designed as a peaceful, beautiful garden which contains beautiful scenery, architecture and artwork.
Cold Cot: Abigail’s Footsteps work with The Bond Group to supply cold cots to hospitals, in order to help parents spend more time with their baby and aid their bereavement. Cold cots are refrigerated cots which support parents and allow them to spend longer with their deceased baby. They have supplied cold cots to over 50 UK hospitals so far.
Bereavement Suites: Another part of Abigail’s Footsteps dedication to support for grieving families is their bereavement suites. In 2016 they opened up the first of their bereavement suites in Medway Maritime Hospital, which is a place where grieving parents can come for some peace and quiet, and where parents of stillborn babies can be alone with their baby.
