Who Are Act Against Bullying?
Act Against Bullying (also known as AAB) formed in 2000 and became registered in 2003, and with a huge 20 years under their belts they are one of the UK’s longest running voluntary anti-bullying charities. The charity began with a mother researching bullying after her daughter was bullied at school, and over the years they have worked hard to research the impact of bullying, methods of prevention and how to best support and recognise the signs of a child experiencing bullying.
They work hard to help hurt children and worried parents, providing information to children who are being bullied and parents who are concerned for their child. Their work is always developing and trying to tackle the common misconceptions about bullying which can put children and parents in challenging situations. AAB challenges the common belief that bullying is purely about physical harm, and highlights the impact of other bullying forms such as verbal bullying, cyber bullying and sexual bullying.
Although they primarily work to support children who are affected by bullying and helping parents to recognise bullying signs, they support adults affected by bullying too. This includes adults who were bullied as children and are still coping with the effects of bullying, as well as adults currently being bullied in situations such as the workplace.
What Does Act Against Bullying Do?
Campaigns: Act Against Bullying are always actively finding ways to raise awareness around bullying and finding ways to help make the world a kinder place. Their Campaigns page has all of their latest anti-bullying initiatives, such as the Cool to be Kind campaign for schools and the Cyber Kind campaign to help reduce cyberbullying.
Bullying Advice and Guidance: Act Against Bullying has lots of helpful advice and guidance for children, young people, parents and adults who are affected by bullying. Their Bullying Advice section helps victims in the steps that they should take when experiencing bullying and more information on what bullying is, the types of bullying and how to get help if you or your loved one is being bullied. Their Blog also has expert advice and tips for the victims of bullying as well as the latest news about anti-bullying campaigns and legislation.
Anti-Bullying Monologues: Anti-bullying monologues have been used by hundreds of organisations and schools in order to prevent bullying and promote empathy. These monologues act out situations which describe incidents of bullying and explore the impact that the situation had on the victim. The students, or employees if done in a work setting, then discuss the feelings of the person who was bullied, open up about times when they might have felt the same way and talk about ways to resolve the problem.
