What Do Brent Lodge Wildlife Hospital Do?
Brent Lodge Wildlife Hospital is based in Sidlesham, West Sussex and provides treatment and rehabilitation for wildlife in need. This can include injured, orphaned or sick animals, and the animals are often brought to them either directly from the public or from the RSPCA and local vets who have come across wildlife cases and have concluded that the animal needs longer-term care, treatment and rehabilitation.
Their team takes in thousands of animals per year, and their staff and volunteer team work with every animal who enters their hospital to provide top quality care in the hopes that they can be fully recovered and released back into the wild when healthy. They get a variety of animals coming through their doors from deer to ducklings, and they work around the clock to ensure that the animals are given the best chance to live a happy, healthy life.
They help thousands of animals every year, and in 2022 they helped a total of 2,351 animals. This consisted of a range of creatures including 23 species of mammal, 60 bird species, 7 bat species, 587 hedgehogs, 600 garden birds and 810 sick or injured mammals.
Why Do Brent Lodge Wildlife Hospital Need Donations?
The hospital costs a lot of money to run to provide the medical equipment, treatment, care, accommodation, rehabilitation and release of their many residents, and Brent Lodge relies on the kindness of donations to keep going. They don’t get any government funding and are entirely dependent on donations, fundraising initiatives, grants and other generous funds donated by the public and businesses. The running of the hospital costs £20 per hour, which adds up to £480 per day and a huge £350,000 per year.
What Services does Brent Lodge Provide?
Wildlife Treatment, Rehabilitation and Release: Brent Lodge helps animals in need through care, veterinary treatment, rehabilitation and eventual safe release back into the wild when/if the animal is healthy. They have a range of Facilities for the animals in their care including treatment rooms, patient wards and intensive care units as well as large mammal pens, bird aviaries, hedgehog pre-release sheds, recovery sheds and isolation units.
Respect and Protect: Brent Lodge also runs a Respect and Protect Outreach programme, which aims to teach people about wildlife and their habitats. They do this through community talks at clubs and groups such as the WI and outreach at school where they educate pupils on wildlife in a fun and engaging way.
Wildlife Advice: Their website is also full of fantastic advice, support and information about what to do if you find an animal in need of help. From how to approach or care for the animal to who to contact and how to care for them in the meantime, make sure to have a read of their Wildlife Advice pages so you know what to do if you come across an animal in need.
They provide treatment, rehabilitation and release for wild animals who are injured, sick or orphaned. Please note that they do not rescue wild animals, and therefore if you find a wild animal in need of help then please contact a wildlife rescue team or wildlife ambulance, your local vet or the RSPCA.
They are also unable to treat animals listed as an invasive species such as grey squirrels and muntjac deer. Therefore please contact a licensed rescue which is able to treat species listed as ‘alien’ or ‘invasive’ such as Urban Squirrels.
