Who Are the British-Ukrainian Aid?
British-Ukrainian Aid is a grassroots charity which is registered in England and Wales No. 1164472; Registered Office: 154 Holland Park Avenue, London W11 4UH.
The charity was created to help people suffering from the impact of the war and humanitarian crisis when Russia invaded Ukraine in 2014. The British-Ukrainian Aid provided this support by aligning the UK and Ukrainian efforts, and for the last 8 years they have provided much needed support for those in need. 100% of their donations are used for the cause as all of their team members are volunteers.
Their work includes a variety of social, medical and educational projects including art therapy and social adaptation courses and sponsoring education grants for the war veterans, sponsoring adaptive athletes, sending humanitarian aid and covering the costs of medical treatment for vulnerable individuals, including the wounded, orphaned children, the elderly and internally displaced persons.
Main Focus Areas
In light of the current events, the British-Ukrainian Aid has been prioritising medical aid to assist those who have been wounded and displaced due to the invasion of Ukraine in 2022.
One of the key focus areas of the British-Ukrainian Aid activities is the supply of First Aid Kits to emergency and relief services in Ukraine. The wonderful donations that the charity receives as well as the help of their incredible volunteers has meant that they have been able to create over 27,000 first aid kits which have been used in Ukraine to save thousands of lives. Their volunteers come from several Ukrainian partner organisations in London such as the Association of Ukrainians in Great Britain (London branch), London EuroMaidan, Support Ukraine Ltd and Plast London.
They also obtain and send ambulances to Ukraine to provide essential, immediate care to those who need it, including casualties and those helping them.
The British-Ukrainian Aid also transports to Ukraine several medical supplies and equipment to those living in extreme positions. These medical essentials include key life-saving medications such as broad-spectrum antibiotics, resuscitation drugs and surgical supplies alongside vital medical equipment such as anaesthetic machines, VAC machines, incubators, ultrasound machines and many other types of medical equipment.
They also offer help to the Ukrainian refugees who are currently living all over Europe, having fled the war. The charity assists them with housing, finding employment, translating and their day to day needs.
They are currently raising funds to supply portable generators to Ukraine helping hospitals, orphanages, schools and shelters get through a bitterly cold winter when power fails and electricity turns off as the result of the russian military constantly attacking Ukraine's energy infrastructure.
How Donations Will Be Used by the British-Ukrainian Aid?
Here is the list of some items that the generous donations made to British-Ukrainian Aid go towards:
- Tourniquet - £20
By donating just £20, they are able to buy a tourniquet which can help save someone's life. Tourniquets are medical devices which are used to control bleeding, and enable someone to stay alive until medical help arrives.
- First Aid Kits - £100
Tactical First Aid Kits are kits that contain items needed for urgent trauma, such as tourniquets, bandages, dressings, gloves and more.
- Basic Rescue System - £716
This is a type of versatile stretcher which aims to reduce the amount of people needed for rescue operations. 2 people rather than 4 are able to operate these systems, leading to less lives being put at risk when saving others.
- Generator - £1500
Generators will alleviate the problems with electricity, water, and heat supplies, as well as mobile and internet connection.
- Ambulance - £8000
In Ukraine, the medical infrastructure has been greatly damaged because of the perpetual attacks on health care. This has led to many people unable to access medical assistance in several areas. Ambulances bring critical care to people in Ukraine and can also be used for rescue operations as well as evacuations.
British-Ukrainian Aid Partners and Scale of Operation
British-Ukrainian Aid works with several UK and international organisations in order to provide as much support for people in need as possible. They are currently working with Medical Aid Ukraine, a Ukrainian initiative which works with UK NHS Trusts and other organisations in the UK such as the Ukrainian Medical Association, the Institute of Emergency Medicine, Re-Act charity, International Christian Medical and Dental Association. Working collaboratively, these UK and Ukrainian organisations can offer a wide range of much-needed support to the men, women and children that are living in or have been displaced by the war and humanitarian crisis.
British-Ukrainian Aid also work with UK and international organisations, such as Bloomberg, Apple, Prudential and EBRD, to send medical aid to hubs in Poland in order to distribute them to Ukraine. From the distribution centre in Lviv, Ukraine, the medical aid can then be sent to several locations in Ukraine such as Kyiv, Kharkiv, Mykolaiv, Odesa and Dnipro, to provide essential medical supplies to people in need all over the country.
In the last few months, they have managed to send 15 lorries, 23 ambulances, 16 cars, 23 vans and 1 plane with medical aid to Ukraine. The British-Ukrainian Aid procured and sent more than 100 ambulances to those in need. For further updates please visit their Facebook page and their website.
