What Does Challenge Wales Do?
The Challenge Wales charity inspires young people aged 12 – 25 years to broaden their horizons, achieve their potential, improve their mental health, develop their life skills and improve their employability prospects through outdoor learning at sea.
The charity achieves this through sailing onboard its 72-foot sailing boat. The charity has been operating for 16 years working with vulnerable young people, those who are financially and socially disadvantaged, those who need a focus in life as well as those looking for adventure or purpose.
Challenge Wales is predominantly volunteer run, with volunteers who support and mentor the young people in a positive can-do way and act as amazing role models.
Not all classrooms have four walls, and Challenge Wales is one of those helping young people get close to the natural world while learning essential life skills enabling them to reach their potential and have a happier and more positive future. For many young people the experience has been life-changing.
How Does Challenge Wales Work?
Through fun, positive support that encourages inclusiveness regardless of ability, activities onboard Challenge Wales develop teamwork & communication skills, resilience and self-confidence, improves mental health and enhances experiential learning around sustainability, environmental and science subjects. In addition the charity’s accredited learning programme offers something tangible for a CV. And, no sailing experience is required to take part.
Challenge Wales provides introductory activities in its shore-side sessions which bring science to life, but often run sailing voyages from 1 day to 7 days for youth groups and individuals.
The charity works with a diverse range of young people including those; in school, unemployed, who are young carers, those who are marginalised, those who are in college, those who are neurodivergent, those with poor mental health, those who are in the care system as well as those who live in rural areas and lack opportunities.
Challenge Wales receives no government funding and relies on donations and grants to enable it to deliver its activities.
