Popular ferry operators for Dover to Calais
Irish Ferries, P&O Ferries and DFDS all serve this short Channel route. The figures below give a quick indication of frequency, crossing time and the example prices displayed by Direct Ferries when checked in July 2026. They are a starting point, not a quote for your journey.

Price and timetable note: operator figures and example prices were checked against Direct Ferries in July 2026. “From” prices are based on recent searches, can exclude service fees and may not apply to your dates, vehicle or passenger group. Timetables also change. Run a live search before deciding.
No preferred operator?
Search the route across the available ferry companies. Use the same passengers, vehicle and ticket requirements for each comparison; otherwise, two apparently similar prices may represent different bookings.
Compare all Dover to Calais ferriesThe crossing in practical terms
P&O Ferries describes its crossing as taking approximately 90 minutes and currently advertises up to 11 departures a day. Irish Ferries also gives a typical port-to-port time of around 90 minutes and advertises up to 10 sailings per day. DFDS lists its journey at about 100 minutes. These are scheduled crossing times rather than promises about the complete trip through check-in and border controls.

Build the right booking before comparing the fare
The lowest number on the first results screen can be misleading when the journey details are incomplete. Start with the crossing you actually intend to make. Add every passenger, use the correct ages and include the full vehicle size.
Roof boxes, rear bicycle racks, trailers and caravans can change the height or length used for the booking. A motorhome should not be entered as a standard car simply because both fit in one parking space at home. If the information is wrong, the fare may change or the booking may need correcting at the port.
Travel date and sailing time
Weekend, school-holiday and bank-holiday departures can behave differently from an ordinary midweek crossing. Search either side of the preferred time when the schedule allows it.
Vehicle height and length
Include attachments and anything being towed. The correct category matters more than obtaining a temporarily lower result.
Restricted or flexible ticket
A restricted fare can suit a firm itinerary. When plans may move, the amendment terms can matter more than a small difference in the first price.
Day trip or short break
Some promotions are built around returning within a set period. They are useful only when your dates genuinely meet that condition.
A fair comparison uses identical details. Do not compare a restricted car fare for one operator with a flexible fare, different sailing or incomplete vehicle description for another.
Irish Ferries, P&O or DFDS: where do the differences matter?
There is no single operator that suits every crossing. Frequency and journey time are easy to compare, but onboard arrangements and ticket conditions can affect the choice too.
Travelling without a car
Foot-passenger availability is not identical across the route. P&O Ferries accepts foot passengers on eligible Dover–Calais sailings and applies an earlier check-in deadline to them. Select the correct passenger type in the search rather than completing a vehicle search and assuming it can be removed later.
Taking a pet
Add the animal during the booking. Space can be limited, and the pet may travel in a lounge, kennel, vehicle or another designated area depending on the operator and option selected.
Irish Ferries currently requires Dover–Calais pets to be declared when booking and limits the number allowed within one reservation.
Food, lounges and the time onboard
This is a short crossing, yet onboard facilities may still matter when travelling with children, pets or after a long drive. P&O lists dining, a Club Lounge, duty-free shopping and a dedicated Pet Lounge among its route facilities. Look at what is included before paying extra for an upgrade.
Plans that may change
Read the fare conditions, not only the ticket name. Direct Ferries explains that amendments remain subject to the operator’s rules and availability, with a fare difference or administration fee possible.
Calais or Dunkirk for the onward drive?
Calais is not automatically the right arrival port simply because the sea crossing is shorter. DFDS also sails from Dover to Dunkirk, which is useful to keep in mind for journeys towards Belgium, the Netherlands and parts of northern France.
Compare the complete drive. Calais may offer the more direct route for one itinerary; Dunkirk can remove road miles from another. Ferry price, arrival time, fuel, tolls and the distance to the final stop all belong in the calculation.
The Port of Dover route guide confirms that P&O Ferries and Irish Ferries serve Calais, while DFDS operates to both Calais and Dunkirk.
Prepare for Dover before the day of travel
Read the confirmation as soon as it arrives. Names, dates, ports, registration details and the return crossing are easier to correct before travel than at check-in.
- Use passenger names that match the travel documents.
- Confirm the registration, vehicle category and overall dimensions.
- Add pets, trailers, caravans, roof boxes and bicycle racks.
- Note the operator’s check-in deadline rather than relying on a general arrival time.
- Keep the confirmation available offline in case mobile reception is poor.
- Review live sailing and traffic information before leaving home.
Check-in requirements are not universal. DFDS currently states that check-in for its Dover–Calais and Dover–Dunkirk services typically closes 60 minutes before the scheduled departure. P&O has different requirements for some passenger types, including foot travellers. The instruction on the booking confirmation takes priority.

Passports, France entry rules and pet documents
British citizens should use current government advice rather than the requirements remembered from an earlier trip. GOV.UK explains the passport rules for France, the conditions for short visits to the Schengen area and the circumstances in which a visa may be needed.
Pet travel has a separate preparation list. Microchip, vaccination and animal-health-document requirements need to be completed within the correct timescales. Operator permission to carry the pet does not replace the border rules.
Check the GOV.UK entry requirements for France and government pet-travel guidance shortly before departure.
When a ferry promotion is genuinely useful
Offers on this route can be tied to a day return, a short break, selected dates or a specific passenger-and-vehicle combination. A bold starting price is not much help when the return date falls outside the offer or the ticket cannot be changed.
Run the ordinary search first. Then compare the relevant promotion using the same journey. If the offer lowers the trip you already planned, it has done its job. If it requires an unsuitable departure or a shorter stay, move on.

How long does the ferry from Dover to Calais take?
The scheduled crossing usually takes around 90 to 100 minutes. Irish Ferries and P&O Ferries advertise approximately 90 minutes, while DFDS lists about 100 minutes. Weather, port conditions and operational changes can affect the journey.
Which companies operate between Dover and Calais?
Irish Ferries, P&O Ferries and DFDS operate the route. Their schedules, example journey times and current prices can be compared through the booking widget and tracked operator links near the top of this page.
How much does a Dover to Calais ferry cost?
The price depends on the dates, sailing time, passengers, vehicle and ticket conditions. Direct Ferries displayed operator examples from about £50 when checked in July 2026, but these are not guaranteed quotes and may exclude service fees. Complete a live search for the current total.
Which operator is cheapest for Dover to Calais?
No operator is cheapest for every journey. Prices vary with the departure, vehicle, passengers and ticket flexibility. Compare identical booking details across Irish Ferries, P&O Ferries and DFDS before choosing.
Can I travel from Dover to Calais as a foot passenger?
P&O Ferries accepts foot passengers on eligible Dover–Calais sailings. Availability and check-in arrangements should be confirmed for the exact departure before booking. Select “foot passenger” in the search rather than entering a vehicle and trying to remove it later.

Dogs can travel on eligible bookings, but the pet must be declared and meet the current entry requirements for France. Where the animal stays onboard depends on the ferry company and pet option selected. Check both the operator policy and GOV.UK pet-travel rules.
Does a roof box change the ferry price?
A roof box can change the vehicle height and therefore the booking category or fare. Enter the full height with the box attached. Rear bicycle racks, trailers and other additions may also alter the total length.
How early should I arrive at Dover ferry port?
Follow the check-in deadline on the booking confirmation. Requirements vary by operator and passenger type, and travellers with pets may need longer. Leave additional time for road traffic, border processing and queues at the port.
Can I change my ferry ticket after booking?
A booking may be changeable, but this depends on the fare, operator, availability and ticket terms. A fare difference or administration charge can apply. Read the amendment conditions before paying if the travel plan is uncertain.
Is Calais or Dunkirk better for driving into Europe?
Calais can be more direct for many journeys into France, while Dunkirk may suit travel towards Belgium, the Netherlands and parts of northern France. Compare the ferry fare with onward mileage, fuel, tolls and arrival time before deciding.
