The Battle of the E-Readers: Kindle Paperwhite vs. Kobo Glo vs. Nook Glowlight
It seems that tablet computers are all anyone can talk about this Christmas, whether it’s the iPad, Samsung’s Galaxy Note or even Microsoft’s new entry the Surface. However, another type of gadget that’s going to be selling like hotcakes is the e-reader.
E-readers have soared in popularity in recent years, with e-books now out-selling paperbacks and hardbacks. Don’t get me wrong, e-readers are not new to the market, but there have been significant developments this year.
So, what’s so different now? Previously, avid readers had to ensure they were in a well-lit area or attach a lamp to the device if they wanted to read in the dark. Now though, we have e-readers complete with backlighting – it’s makes you wonder why it wasn’t thought of earlier!
With three new models on the market, which one should you buy this Christmas?
The price of these e-readers will definitely influence your decision, so we’ve searched through our database of UK promo codes to find some great deals for you.
Amazon Kindle Paperwhite - Save 10% with Argos Promo Codes
The Amazon Kindle is the most popular e-reader on the market, but we’re putting it up against some other strong contenders to find out which is truly the best. The Kindle Paperwhite has better features than the other two, such as 3G connectivity (on the more expensive model), an X-ray feature and a handy time-left-in-chapter function.
However, there are a couple of complaints –you’ll miss out on expandable storage and are only able to buy from Amazon’s Kindle Store. The Kindle Store requires books to be published in Kindle format and as such limits availability, but those that are available via the Kindle Store are often cheaper than if bought from other sellers.
Price: £109 (£169 for 3G model)
You can buy Kindle Paperwhite from Amazon, PC World and Argos, but you might be able to save on the retail price by taking advantage of our incredible free promo codes. For example, you could save 10% with Argos voucher codes.
Kobo Glo - Save Up to 40% with Kobo Discount Codes
Next up is another popular e-reader, which is cheaper than the Kindle Paperwhite, but lacks the option to connect via 3G. This will instantly reduce the appeal for some, but in reality, few of us need to be hooked up to the internet 24/7, just to read a book. The Kobo Glo does weigh less than the Kindle and it can be personalised with different coloured ‘snapbacks’.
There are a couple of features on the Kobo Glo that can’t be found on the Paperwhite, including Reading Life, Discover and a wishlist. The Kobo Glo supports the EPUB standard so there are literally hundreds of thousands of books to choose from, unlike on the Kindle, which is much more restricted. The Kobo Glo is cheaper than the Kindle, but only by £10.
Price: £99.99
You can buy the Kobo Glo from WH Smith, Dixon's, Asda, Sainsburys, Staples, Argos, WH Smith, John Lewis, Play.com, Co-op, Freemans and JD Williams but you could make some huge savings on the normal price by using our UK promo codes. Just for starters, shop with Kobo voucher codes and you could save up to 40% off, or if you use our Dixons promo codes, you'll get free delivery.
Nook Simple Touch Glowlight - Save Money Using Currys Promo Codes
Barnes & Noble also launched an illuminated e-reader this year, but at the same price as Kindle Paperwhite, does it have what it takes to knock Amazon off the top spot? Well, in terms of size and weight they are similar, but the Nook is wider and fatter than both the Kindle Paperwhite and Kobo Glo. The display seriously lets down the Nook Glowlight, it’s just nowhere near as crisp and even as the Kindle and comes behind the Kobo Glo too. The Nook Simple Touch Glowlight does offer at least one popular benefit – an expandable memory thanks to its SD card slot. Again though, like the Kobo Glo, the Nook Glowlight is Wi-Fi only.
Price: £109
