What do Feeding Britain Do?
Feeding Britain works with organisations across the UK to provide meals for those in need, prevent food poverty and food insecurity, and help make hunger history. They do this by working with a variety of organisations including schools, charities, local authorities and community groups, helping them provide directly to people in need and gathering information on the prevalence and impact of hunger in the UK. Through this gathering of information and data, they then work toward targeting the root causes of food poverty and insecurity and changing these issues through government policies and legislation.
How Feeding Britain Helps Relieve Hunger in the UK
Local and Regional Partners
Charities and Community Groups: Feeding Britain works with local groups and organisations that work with people in food insecurity and poverty. This includes local food banks, schools and community organisations who prevent hunger by providing food directly to those in need. They help them by providing advice and practical supplies, implementing projects, help with organisational activities and support in fundraising.
They have implemented local projects all over the UK to strive towards their goal of eliminating hunger completely and ensuring everyone is able to access nutritional food without worry.
National Network
Through their work with various organisations, they have then created a national network of partners all over the UK who can share information with one another and work together to end hunger. This network helps individual organisations to come together for joint fundraising, to conduct and use research, to share practices and ideas to learn together and see what works to achieve their collective goals.
UK-Wide Partners and National Policy Reform
Finally, they work with cross party groups of MPs, ministers and officials to bring about policy change all over the UK. They are able to bring the concerns of the individual charities and community groups, as well as the wider concerns and research findings of the national network, and present them to people who can enact nationwide change.
Innovative Food Projects
Feeding Britain works with a number of organisations across the UK to help people access high quality food and have a safety net for those struggling with food insecurity. These projects fall into four key categories which are implemented all over the UK:
Affordable Food Clubs: Affordable Food Clubs allow people to access affordable nutritious food as well as support and advice on food security. They are available in communities all over the UK in different forms, from food buses to social supermarkets, and they offer food essentials at a fraction of the usual price, enabling people on lower incomes and limited budgets to get the food they need. This alleviates the need for food banks, helps people on low incomes to buy nutritious food items and provides support for other issues at the same time.
Pathways from Poverty: The support and advice offered in these community food projects and Affordable Food Clubs covers topics such as how to access benefits and support, finances and saving advice, as well as debt support. Through their Pathways from Poverty project, they place advice workers into these places who can help to resolve wider issues associated with food insecurity and hunger such as poverty, debt, housing and employment.
Feeding Britain has helped over 275 Affordable Food Clubs with their regional partners.
Healthy Holidays: School holidays can be an exciting time for many kids, but for a lot of families it is a time of stress, food insecurity and hunger. Without school meals or other support during term time, and with many parents needing to work or take time off to care for their kids, many families struggle with food insecurity and poverty. Healthy Holidays is a project which combines fun activities and healthy, nutritious meals for children during school holidays. Through providing nutritious meals and activities for children in need, Healthy Holidays helps children’s physical and mental health whilst alleviating parents' financial struggles to provide healthy food and cover childcare costs.
Fuel Banks: Fuel Banks help people in crisis who are having to make the difficult decision between eating and heating their homes. They provide 2 weeks emergency fuel credit to help keep power on in the home for people who are at risk of disconnection.
Best Practice Guides: Feeding Britain helps individuals, groups and organisations across the UK to understand food poverty and find guidance on how best to help those in need. Their Best Practice Guides offer practical advice based on their successful projects as well as their ongoing work with regional and national organisations.
