About Habitat for Humanity Great Britain
Habitat for Humanity Great Britain is a UK charity which battles poverty and homelessness worldwide. They help to permanently break the cycle of poverty through housing, and allow families to achieve strength, stability, and self-reliance.
With a vision of creating a world where everyone has a safe place to call home, Habitat for Humanity Great Britain works hard to implement a variety of global projects in order to help eradicate poverty housing.
How Habitat for Humanity Are Creating Change Around The World
As a charity that supports projects around the world, Habitat for Humanity Great Britain work towards achieving their vision in a multitude of ways, including:
- Delivering hygiene training, and building hygiene facilities, such as private toilets and water pumps that enable communities, individuals, and families to practice safe hygiene habits.
- Finding sustainable solutions for people that are displaced by urbanisation. More recently, Habitat for Humanity supported refugees that had fled the war in Ukraine that were in need of a safe place to call home in the neighbouring countries of Poland, Romania, and Hungary where they operate.

- Building climate friendly, and climate resilient housing whilst supporting environmentally forward projects that create sustainable changes like this project in Myanmar.
- Providing emergency response to countries that are experiencing disasters, such as supporting vulnerable communities during the COVID-19 outbreak, rebuilding homes for families in Haiti following the 2021 earthquake, and assisting people whose homes were destroyed during the 2008 Monsoon in Nepal.

- In Great Britain, the charity’s Empty Spaces to Homes project is turning empty spaces into safe shelter for vulnerable people. Through extensive renovation and rehabilitation work, Habitat for Humanity Great Britain has recently provided safe housing for young people that have left the care system.
- Spreading awareness about gender inequalities and inheritance rights, such as helping women to obtain the necessary documents needed in order for them to own land and property. In Zambia, for example, through a Participatory Approach to Safe Shelter Awareness, the charity is working with women by forming study groups and financial support groups that enable them to come together to create action plans for positive change.

- Rehabilitating slums and finding solutions for people that have been displaced by urbanisation. In Ethiopia, people living in informal settlements are susceptible to natural disasters. When rain comes, structures are often unstable, and many are completely destroyed. Slums are also generally very overcrowded and lack proper sanitation facilities such as sinks and toilets. Habitat for Humanity is working to build safe and secure housing in areas like Addis Ababa to improve the quality of life for vulnerable people living in unsafe housing
- Alongside the Empty Spaces to Homes project in Great Britain, the charity host corporate volunteers at their upcycling workshop in London. Through this upcycling workshop, the charity are giving pre-loved donated items a new lease of life by turning them into high-quality furniture. This furniture is then being used to furnish Habitat for Humanity’s newly renovated homes for vulnerable people.
