How Much Does a Garden Fence Cost? Our 10m Materials Price Test
A 10-metre garden fence can cost from £377.32 in materials using Green Lap panels and timber posts to £918.47 for Double Slatted panels with concrete posts and gravel boards in our price test. That is before delivery.

These are materials-only figures, not professional installation quotes. We priced real David Musson Fencing products to show what changing the panel style and post system does to the cost. Labour, removal of an old fence and site-specific work would increase the final amount paid. Prices were checked on 5 October 2026 and include VAT.

What Is Included in the Price?
For the comparison above we used an approximately 6ft-high straight fence with no gates or corners. A 10m run requires six complete panels for each of the specifications tested. Green Lap and Green Feather Edge panels are 1.83m wide, while the slatted panels are 1.8m wide.
With timber posts, six panels need seven 2.4m posts and 14 bags of post mix. David Musson recommends a minimum 2.4m post for a 6ft fence and around two 20kg bags of post mix per post.
The concrete version uses five intermediate slotted posts, two end posts, six concrete gravel boards and 14 bags of post mix. Single and Double Slatted panels also need two packers per panel when fitted with 1.83m concrete posts and gravel boards, adding 12 packers to this 10m example.
What Are You Paying Extra For?
The cheapest panel does not simply become the cheapest option because of a different percentage discount or delivery charge. The construction of the panel itself accounts for much of the difference in our test.
Green Lap: the lowest upfront cost
The Green Lap panel uses overlapping horizontal softwood boards and is pressure treated. It is the least expensive panel in our comparison at £35.33 for the 6ft x 6ft panel.
Across the full 10m timber-post specification, Green Lap comes to £377.32. That makes it the useful baseline for comparing what the other panel styles add to the bill.
Green Feather Edge: £84.36 more across 10m
Green Feather Edge uses overlapping vertical boards within a heavier framed panel. It creates a solid barrier rather than the more basic overlapping horizontal construction of the Lap panel.
The six panels required for our test cost £296.34 compared with £211.98 for Green Lap. Once the same timber posts and post mix are added, the difference across the whole 10m fence is £84.36.
Single Slatted: £215.34 more than Lap
Single Slatted panels use planed rounded softwood slats with gaps of approximately 16mm between them. The open slatted construction gives a noticeably different result from a solid Lap or Feather Edge panel, but the price moves with it.
Using timber posts, our 10m Single Slatted specification costs £215.34 more than Green Lap. If that more open slatted appearance is not important to the project, the figures show how much can be saved by choosing the simpler panel.
Double Slatted: more privacy at the highest price in our test
Double Slatted panels place slats on alternating sides so that the gaps are covered from the opposite face. David Musson describes this version as providing more privacy than its Single Slatted panel.
That construction also produced the highest materials cost in our comparison. With timber posts, Double Slatted costs £347.52 more than Green Lap across 10 metres. With the concrete system, the gap rises to £376.92.
The useful question is therefore not simply which panel is cheapest, but whether the difference in construction and privacy is worth the extra cost for the garden being fenced.
Timber or Concrete Fence Posts: How Much More Does Concrete Cost?
The post system is the other major cost decision. For Green Lap and Green Feather Edge, changing from timber posts to concrete posts with concrete gravel boards adds £164.23 to our 10m materials bill.
For Single and Double Slatted fencing, the difference is £193.63. The additional £29.40 comes from the 12 panel packers required to match the 1.8m slatted panels to the 1.83m concrete system.
This means a shopper comparing panel prices alone can underestimate the difference between two fence specifications. Posts, gravel boards, post mix and any required packers all affect the amount actually spent.
How Much Does Fencing Cost Per Metre?
Our material-only test puts a 6ft garden fence at between £37.73 and £72.48 per metre with timber posts. Using the concrete-post and gravel-board system increases the range to £54.16 to £91.85 per metre.
Those figures should not be confused with supplied-and-installed fencing prices. A contractor quote can also include labour, removal of existing fencing, disposal, access difficulties, ground conditions and additional materials that are outside this price test.
How Many Fence Panels Do You Need for 10 Metres?
All four specifications in our 10m test require six complete fence panels. Green Lap and Green Feather Edge panels are 1.83m wide, so five panels would cover only 9.15m. The calculation therefore rounds up to six because a fraction of a panel cannot be ordered.
The Single and Double Slatted panels are 1.8m wide. Six are also required for a 10m run. When slatted panels are used with the concrete system, the calculator allows for the packers used to bring each panel to approximately 1.83m wide.
How Do David Musson Fencing Delivery Zones Work?
David Musson Fencing's delivery charge for larger fencing orders is based on the delivery postcode and its distance from the company's yard in Leicestershire. The fixed-price area is split into eight zones, increasing in roughly 10-mile bands up to 80 miles. The further the delivery address is from the yard, the higher the charge.
For the fencing materials used in our price test, the current delivery charges including VAT are:
- Collection: Free
- Zone 1 - up to 10 miles: £12
- Zone 2 - up to 20 miles: £21.60
- Zone 3 - up to 30 miles: £42
- Zone 4 - up to 40 miles: £67.20
- Zone 5 - up to 50 miles: £93.60
- Zone 6 - up to 60 miles: £138
- Zone 7 - up to 70 miles: £153.60
- Zone 8 - up to 80 miles: £168
- More than 80 miles: Delivery quote required
The zones are based on postcode, so you do not need to measure the driving distance yourself. David Musson publishes the postcodes covered by each zone on its delivery page. If your postcode falls outside the fixed-price area, you can request an individual delivery quote when placing the order.
Why the Delivery Zone Matters to the Final Fence Cost
Delivery can make a significant difference when comparing fencing prices. For example, the Green Lap fence with concrete posts and gravel boards in our 10m test costs £541.55 in materials. The same order would cost:
- £541.55 if collected;
- £553.55 with Zone 1 delivery;
- £583.55 with Zone 3 delivery;
- £635.15 with Zone 5 delivery;
- £709.55 with Zone 8 delivery.
That means the delivery location alone can add as much as £168 to this particular materials order. It is therefore worth comparing the delivered total rather than looking only at the fence-panel price.
Our fence cost calculator lets you select the appropriate delivery zone so the charge is included in your estimate. If you are unsure which zone covers your postcode, check the David Musson Fencing delivery zones before ordering.
David Musson also uses courier delivery for some smaller items under its size and weight limits. A typical fence-panel order contains large or heavy products, so the fixed delivery-zone system above is the relevant comparison for the fencing examples on this page.
Which Option Gives the Lowest Materials Cost?
Green Lap with timber posts is the lowest-cost specification in our test at £377.32 for 10 metres. Feather Edge increases the spend moderately, while the move to Single or Double Slatted panels has a much larger effect on the total.
There is no single cheapest specification once appearance, privacy and the preferred post system are taken into account. The practical way to compare them is to keep the fence length and installation system the same, then look at what each change adds to the price. That is what the calculator above is designed to do.
What About David Musson Voucher Codes and Offers?
We have deliberately not deducted a voucher or promotional offer from any of the prices on this page. Offers change, and restrictions may mean that a discount does not apply to every product in a fencing order.
If you want to check whether there is a current saving available, see our David Musson Fencing voucher codes and offers and compare the terms with the products you intend to order. The price test and calculator remain based on the underlying product prices rather than assuming a discount will apply.
How We Calculated the Prices
We checked the product prices on 5 October 2026 and used the VAT-inclusive selling prices for identifiable David Musson Fencing products. The calculator database records the exact panel variants, timber and concrete posts, gravel boards, post mix and slatted-panel packers used in the calculation.
The figures are estimates for materials rather than quotes for a finished fence. They exclude professional labour, removal and disposal of old fencing, gates, corners, tools, additional fixings and work required because of individual ground or site conditions. Prices can change, and the amount of material needed on a real installation may differ, so check the current calculator result and merchant prices before ordering.
