The Isolation Games: What to Play When You’re Cooped Up Inside
For some, not being allowed out of the house during the coronavirus pandemic is massively restricting everyday life, but if you’re a gamer, then it might mean that you have more of a chance to finish the games you’ve been wanting to complete, and start some new ones you’ve been waiting to play. So if you’re gaming mad and looking to fill your waking hours, or perhaps you’re someone with a passing interest wanting to kill time before they’re let outside again, what are the best games you can get on the market right now?
Animal Crossing: New Horizons
It seems like the makers of Animal Crossing’s latest edition have stuck a bit lucky with the timing of their launch. Released on 20th March, the game in which you get in debt to a racoon after buying his island has been a big hit. Exclusively available on the Nintendo Switch, the popularity of the title has seen many people get their hands on a brand new console just so that they can play the game. And if you’re one of the many people who’ve done that, then you might want to see what other Nintendo gaming goodies are currently Argos best sellers.

Doom Eternal
Also released on March 20th was a game that’s the opposite to Animal Crossing in almost every conceivable way. It’s not cutesy, it’s not a calming experience and it’s not that family friendly. In the fifth main game in the Doom series, players take on the role of the Doom Slayer, an ancient warrior who battles the demonic forces of Hell. At the start of the story, 60% of the world’s population has been wiped out by demonic forces, so the Doom Slayer’s mission is to put an end to Hell’s invasion of Earth. Quite a world away from fishing and catching butterflies it seems. The game is from a first-person perspective and has received positive reviews from critics, so whether you’re a fan of the old Doom games or a fan of first-person shooters who wants to try something new, then Doom Eternal is well worth checking out.
Star Wars: Jedi Fallen Order
It seems like you can’t go five minutes without seeing or hearing something Star Wars related. It’s everywhere, what with the recent release of Disney+ in the UK, the Rise of Skywalker being released on digital download and of course, the popularity of the latest Star Wars game. Released in mid-November 2019, the game had, by January, already sold 8 million copies. In the single player story, you take control of Jedi Cal Kestis, who managed to survive the purge and wants to rebuild the Jedi Order, all whilst trying to evade destruction by the Imperial Inquisitors. It’s the ultimate escapism game, so perfect if you want to lose yourself in the vast Star Wars universe and block out the outside world. 365Games are a great retailer of everything gaming, and have everything you could possibly need to entertain yourself for hours upon hours. F1 2019
If you’re a sports fan then you’re probably at a loss now that the sporting calendar has been completely gutted. The Six Nations postponed, the football season on hold, the Olympics moving to 2021 and the F1 season being delayed. In order to fill the void, many have used the gap in the sporting schedules to get into esports, be it playing or watching. You may be tempted to see how McLaren’s F1 star Lando Norris gets on in the world of streaming, or you could have a go at racing the same circuits as he has in a Formula 1 car with F1 2019. The 2020 edition of the game is still at least a couple of months away, so there’s plenty of time to get your hands on a copy of the game to blitz your way through every track to win the championship.
And All the Tech
Having more time to play isn’t just an excuse to get new games, it’s also an opportunity to upgrade your setup. Whether it’s something big like a new console or a larger screen, or something a bit smaller like gaming headphones or an extra controller, now’s a better time than any to upgrade. Currently Maplin have Sony products starting from £49.99, and currently at Currys you can get 6 months of Spotify Premium for free when you buy selected tech items like laptops, games, TVs and much more.
