Who are Let’s Talk About Loss?
Let’s Talk About Loss is a UK-based charity dedicated to supporting young people — aged 18–35 — who have been bereaved. Their vision is simple but powerful: no young griever should have to face grief alone.
The charity was founded by Beth French, after she lost her mum when she was 20. Experiencing grief so young left her feeling lonely and confused — and acutely aware that grief often becomes a taboo topic, especially for young people. In response, she set up Let’s Talk About Loss to create a safe, welcoming community where young people could talk openly about loss without fear, shame or awkwardness.
From that difficult personal loss has grown a supportive community, empowering young grievers to share their experiences, connect with others who understand, and challenge the stigma around grief.
What Does Let’s Talk About Loss Do?
Peer-Led Meet Ups Across the UK
Let’s Talk About Loss organises monthly peer-led meet ups in cities across the UK — in total, there are over 35 meet ups currently. These meet ups are not therapy sessions, formal support groups, or counselling. Instead they are casual, relaxed gatherings designed to provide space for conversation, community and understanding. The charity emphasises that there are no hard chairs, no forced “sad stuff,” and no pressure — you join simply to talk, listen, and be with people who “get it.”
If there isn’t a local meet up near you, Let’s Talk About Loss also offers online group meet ups, making their support accessible no matter where you are in the UK.
This peer-led approach is at the heart of their mission: grief can be lonely, but shared loss can bring people together. They believe that young grievers supporting each other — without judgment or stigma — can help all of them feel heard, validated, and less alone.
A Vision & Mission Rooted in Empathy
Let’s Talk About Loss operates around a clear vision: No young griever grieves alone.
To realise that vision, they pursue a mission built on three core pillars:
- Uniting young grievers to form a safe, supportive community.
- Encouraging honest expression — putting words to feelings and giving voice to grief.
- Raising awareness of grief among young people and working to dismantle the taboos surrounding bereavement and mental health.
Their values emphasise safety, support, openness, and empowerment. Hosts of meet ups receive training to ensure everyone feels comfortable and supported. In their words: “When we feel safe, when we are supported, and when we can be open, we are empowered.”
It’s this combination of peer support, compassion, and honesty that makes Let’s Talk About Loss a unique — and deeply needed — charity.
Real Impact & Community Feedback
The impact of Let’s Talk About Loss is illustrated by the feedback from attendees: according to their own figures, 95% of participants say their meet ups have been helpful in coping with grief, and 93% would recommend attending a meet up to a friend.
These numbers speak volumes — not only about the demand for grief support among young people, but also about how effective peer-led, empathetic community can be.
Why Let’s Talk About Loss Matters — Especially Now
Bereavement support tends to focus on older adults or on traditional counselling models. Young people who lose someone close often find themselves overlooked. That’s where Let’s Talk About Loss steps in, offering a tailored, youth-focused space where grief is acknowledged, normalised, and shared in community.
By creating a network of meet ups, they help break isolation. By encouraging honest conversation, they challenge the stigma around grief and mental health. And by offering peer-led, accessible support — both in person and online — they reduce barriers that might prevent a grieving young person from reaching out.
For many, that community can make the difference between feeling lost in grief and finding connection, comfort, and hope.
