Marks and Spencer's New Range for Special Needs Children
It's always nice to see businesses trying to include everyone and Marks and Spencer are now making a range of clothing for special needs children. Often if somebody has a reason to need specialised clothing, they won't be able to buy them from the mainstream clothing outlets and will instead have to order from the Internet or find a very obscure shop that supplies what they need; either of these things could be very expensive. So it's really good that Marks and Spencer have acknowledged that different people have different needs and are being more inclusive in the range of products that they offer.
What does this include?
Marks and Spencer will now be providing is a range of clothes that includes large body suits, sleep suits and vests with poppers. These are being offered in response to a customer who complained that she was unable to find any appropriate clothing for her son who, at age three, needed to wear nappies and use a feeding tube. This was a very valid and fair criticism, so Marks and Spencer have now done the right thing and expanded the range of clothing they offer so that customers like her can find the things that they need.
As a society, we often think of nappies as something only worn by babies, but there are many older children who have to wear them. What many wouldn't have considered is that the average piece of clothing for anyone other than a baby, won't be made to accommodate a nappy. Nappies are so much bigger than regular underwear and so extra space is required for them when they are worn under other items of clothing. That's not to mention the hassle that a feeding tube can cause somebody! Marks and Spencer will now be offering clothing like this for children up to the age of eight years old. The new range will be popping up sporadically across the new few weeks. One of the things that they're doing is creating more accessible versions of existing items of clothing; this will mean that special needs children could enjoy the exact same things that other children will be wearing. Marks and Spencer are also offering a few unique items of clothing to be part of this new, inclusive range. So far these products have been very popular and are quickly becoming sold out, but more will be produced and the range is likely to expand.
Progress towards all-inclusive Clothing
Now that Marks and Spencer have taken this effort towards being more inclusive, it will be interesting to see what they do in future. This is a firm step in the right direction and will hopefully encourage them to produce more items of clothing which are inclusive for those with special needs. From a business point of view, this will just increase the appeal of their business and bring them more customers and sales, all the while making things simpler for people with special needs. It's a win-win situation.
