Who Are Mothers Uncovered?
Mothers Uncovered are a team of Sussex-based mothers who help to empower women with the adjustment to motherhood, manage their wellbeing and find support. The process of becoming a mother is known as ‘matrescence’. Similarly to adolescence, motherhood brings changes in the body, hormonal fluctuations and a new identity. However, we only focus on the physical act of producing a baby and many women feel completely at sea and socially isolated. Motherhood can be a wonderful experience, however it can also be a very challenging process and bringing a new infant into the world comes with a lot of new emotions and experiences. One of the biggest shifts that women experience in motherhood is that of their role from woman to mother. Many struggle to maintain a sense of identity and selfhood whilst also being a caregiver for a new life.
Babies take up a lot of time, and often mothers are the primary caregiver for their child, particularly during the early years. Without the ability to meet new people, engage in previously beloved hobbies or even spend some time alone, many mothers experience the feeling of losing their identity as women outside of motherhood.
Mothers Uncovered therefore, provides a support network for mothers in Brighton and Hove and beyond to connect, share their experiences and emotions, express their feelings and stories through various art forms and find the woman they are again outside of motherhood, helping both the women themselves and their families.
They also assist women experiencing issues such as postnatal depression, postnatal psychosis and bonding issues, helping them open up about their feelings and access local mental health support. Unfortunately, although these postnatal challenges are common for mothers of all ages, these issues are still not discussed a lot in mainstream media, and women often feel guilt, shame and hopelessness if they experience these problems.
What Do Mothers Uncovered Do?
Mothers Uncovered run a variety of workshops and groups for women in all stages of motherhood.
Groups: They run a range of groups which consist of 5-6 weekly sessions, and involve discussing a focus topic, engaging in guided exercises and being given further activities to do at home. Some of the previous groups have focussed on elements of motherhood such as body image, and involve activities such as mindfulness, guided writing and art. They run sessions in Brighton and Hove and further afield in East and West Sussex.
Individual Workshops: Their individual workshops are designed for all women to explore an activity such as creative writing or singing, meet new people and explore their feelings in a safe environment. They have these workshops available online, in East Sussex and in West Sussex, so everyone can participate either in person or online.
You can find out about the latest events, groups and workshops that are taking place by visiting the Mothers Uncovered What’s On page.
