President Obama has recently signed a bill that has been fast-tracked and will overturn the food labelling law.
The decision has received mixed reactions from both sides of the argument. Many major retailers have already argued that GMO’s aren’t harmful and should be okay to use without warning, but surely everyone has a right to know what they are putting into their body whether it is detrimental or not. Another issue brought up by food merchants is the fact that they have already began their labels spending millions on production and they will now have to do it all over again but to the new regulations. Even those who oppose GMO’s and appealed for companies to label exactly what is in each product but it seems that this bill doesn’t exactly adhere to that.
Why isn’t everybody Happy?
The aforementioned issue for those who are anti genetic engineering and wish for clearer labelling still don’t feel pleased. That’s because there are many loopholes, one of the many that has been highlighted is that some ingredients could miss the GMO labelling if they don’t contain ‘genetic material’. That means according to the FDA, oils and purified proteins could escape the labelling regulations even if they were sourced from GE crops. Another aspect of this new law that hasn’t impressed is the fact that many of the ingredients and labels will be online- meaning you need to access a URL or use a smartphone to find out more. This could leave some people out and make it quite unfair on those that can’t afford a smart phone or the right tariff.
What Is The S. 764?
It’s known as a bill that can overturn a law- the bill has a bizarre history and they can actually come into play without ever facing a committee. This bill was fast-tracked and many feel as though it has been compromised because of this. Find out more about the S. 764 bill by clicking here.
