What Does the Raptor Foundation Do?
The Raptor Foundation is a UK charity whose primary aims are to rescue, rehabilitate, release, provide sanctuary for and provide education around birds of prey. This includes species such as buzzards, hawks, falcons, eagles, owls, harriers and kites. The main features of the foundation are:
Onsite Hospital: This is where the birds brought into the foundation are assessed, treated, given medical care and emergency aid. They treat a variety of injuries for a range of species, and their staff are all trained in emergency aid and aftercare, with a specialist avian vet on call when needed. Their resident birds also come here for their regular medical checks and any medical treatment they are undergoing.
Many of their onsite hospital cases are birds brought in by the public, or brought in to a local vets which does not have the space for prolonged rehabilitation. If you find an injured bird and need to contact the Raptor Foundation, then you can do so on the details below. They also have an advice page for finding injured birds and how you can help.
Sanctuary: Birds that can live a happy and healthy life under their care, are taken in as a permanent resident. The Raptor Foundation currently has over 150 resident birds at the sanctuary. All of their birds are given regular medical checks, and are housed in large aviaries with suitable enrichment to make their environment as close to their natural one as possible.
Conservation and Biodiversity: Helping these feathered friends get back on their feet also helps to maintain biodiversity efforts in the wild. Through habitat loss, traffic injuries, prey animal decline and the use of toxic chemicals for prey animals and in the environment, many bird of prey species are now on the red and amber conservation list.
Throughout the Raptor Foundation, biodiversity has been at the forefront of their environmental planning. The site has a variety of native British tree species, a wildlife pond and a range of shrubs, plants and flowers to encourage the local wildlife population. This also means that alongside butterflies, toads, birds and small mammals, wild birds of prey also reside in the local area around the centre.
What Is Available For Visitors At Raptor Foundation?
Raptor Foundation welcome visitors to the centre, to meet their birds and gain experience working with these incredible animals.
Education and Experiences: Raptor Foundation knows that part of the puzzle to solving the conservation crisis, and improving the public's perception of birds of prey, is through education. They provide a variety of experiences, displays and courses for adults and children, school learning sessions and more at their education and conservation centre.
For example, kids can become a keeper for the day, visitors can come and meet the birds, meet the meerkats and the whole family can enjoy their incredible falconry displays.Children over 16 can even go on a Hawk Walk, where they can walk with a bird through the local countryside, as the hawk explores the area, flying and hunting, and returning to the visitors gloved hand.
Tearoom, Playground and Pond: Their visitor centre also has a tearoom known as the Silent Wings Tearoom, which is fully stocked with food and drinks, as well as facilities for birthday parties. Kids can also enjoy their playground, and visit their wildlife area and pond which is home to a diverse range of butterflies, moths, newts, dragonflies and much more.
