Find Out What's Really in Starbucks' Chocolate Chips
Starbucks are one of the nicest places to treat yourself to a tasty lunch, but what do they put in their chocolate chips? Any people who regularly enjoy a lunch a Starbucks may well have noticed that their drinks come with “chocolatey chips” rather than “chocolate chips”, why is this? Are they just trying to be fun and unique in the ways that they name their foods? Or are you actually eating something which is not actually chocolate? And even if it's not chocolate, should you care? Well, we have the answers for you right here, curious Starbucks fan.
Obviously, there are many different kinds of chocolate and all of them are made up of different things. You might have an extremely sweet white chocolate bar or some downright bitter 90% cocoa dark chocolate. Both things can taste very nice, both things are still chocolate and both things taste very different. So with such a range of things included under the broad chocolate umbrella, where do the Starbucks chocolatey chips fit in? Or should that be do they fit in?
The official requirements for what constitutes chocolate (created by the FDA in America) is that “Sweet chocolate contains not less than 15 percent by weight of chocolate liquor” which seems fair enough, considering all of the possible variations. So what's in those chocolately chips? Well, here's a recipe:
“Confectionery Coating (Sugar, 100% RSPO Palm Kernel And Palm Oils, Cocoa Processed With Alkali, Soy Lecithin, Vanilla, Milk), Cocoa Processed With Alkali, Cookie Crumbs (Unbleached Unenriched Wheat Flour, Sugar, Palm And Palm Kernel Oil, Cocoa Processed With Alkali, Chocolate Mass, Salt, Baking Soda, Soy Lecithin, Natural Flavor), Chocolate Mass (2%), And Salt.”
Don't Panic!
As you can see, Starbucks infamous chocolatey chips do not quite fit the official requirements. So the reason they call their flakes chocolatey and not just “chocolate” is because they can't legally do so. But should you be afraid? Not at all! Things like this are just a money-saving strategy and if you look through that recipe you'll realise that it doesn't really contain anything to raise your eyebrows about. Chocolatey chips may not strictly be chocolate, but never mind! It doesn't really matter too much.
