What Does Stop Hate UK Do?
Stop Hate UK is one of the leading organisations who fight against hate and discrimination in the UK, covering all aspects of hate crime whether they take place in the corporate, statutory, or community sectors. Today, they operate the only free Hate Crime Reporting Service in the UK which is open 24/7 and is designed to help people report hate crimes targeted towards individuals because of their identity or perceived identity (Race, Disability, Age, Belief/Religion/Faith, Sexual Orientation, Sex/Gender, Transgender identity and Alternative Subculture).
Stop Hate UK began as a direct response to a well known case of racially motivated hate crime: the murder of Stephen Lawrence.
This infamous murder case highlighted to need to tackle hate crime in the UK and recognise how individuals are discriminated against, harmed and even murdered due to aspects of their identity.
In 2006, the Stop Hate Line was launched by Stop Hate UK to respond to The Stephen Lawrence Inquiry 1999, Recommendation 16 which stated that
"all possible steps should be taken by police services at the local level in consultation with local Government and other agencies and local communities to encourage the reporting of racist incidents and crimes. This should include: the ability to report at locations other than police stations; and the ability to report 24-hours a day.”
Since then, Stop Hate UK have developed their reporting services to include all form of hate and discrimination, broadening their support services to help people of all identities who are affected by discrimination and targeted hate. Whether it is on the basis of race, gender identity, sex, sexuality, disability or any other aspect of identity, Stop Hate UK work to help eradicate hate and discrimination ad support those who fall victim to it.
Today, their 24-hour helplines remain a core function of Stop Hate UK. On a daily basis, they delivery advocacy and support, speaking to people who are directly impacted by hate and discrimination. They work around the clock to listen and provide vital emotional and practical support to their callers. These conversations give them valuable insight into what people experience and help them to build their own cases by recording all details independently and confidentially as an organisation. Ensuring their reporting methods are highly accessible, they have several apps (Safer Streets in Walthamstow, Newham Stay Safe, as well as reporting apps in Stockport and Merseyside), as well as Call Hate Out, a service for under 18’s, British Sign Language reporting and Text relay.
What Services do Stop Hate UK provide?

They listen, they believe, and they advise. 24-hours a day, 365 days a year, they are at the end of the line, waiting for your call, so you don’t suffer in silence. They know that barriers to reporting discrimination still exists, and that is why their service is 100% confidential, entirely independent, and very easily accessible so people can access the support they need, when they need it. Their services are only operational in areas that commission their helplines and other reporting services.
Education and Training - Education is key to changing hearts and minds. The charity works with companies, organisations, schools and colleges to deliver training programmers, workshops and guidance to senior leaders, staff, teachers and students on the impact of hate, how to recognise it, stand up to it, and report it.
Online Services – They encourage the reporting of online hate incidents and crime to their helplines just as they encourage reports of offline Hate incidents and crimes. Other than where and how it occurs, online hate is no different than offline hate. Their team works to counter hate online through counter messaging and actively helps to remove harmful content online.
On your Side (East and South East Asian hate Reporting) - Stop Hate UK is especially proud to be a leading partner in delivering a national report and support service for people who are affected by East and South East Asian hate. ‘On Your Side’ service is a direct response to the rise in racist attacks following the COVID-19 pandemic.
