This October, we have the incredible Tall Ships Youth Trust taking part in the My Favourite Voucher Codes charity poll. Tall Ships Youth Trust help disadvantaged youth to develop the confidence, and skills to reach their full potential, through transformational youth ocean voyages. They have four Challenger and ketch vessels which offer sailing voyages year-round, offering young people unique experiences to change their lives. What Does Tall Ships Youth Trust Do?

Tall Ships Youth Trust (TSYT) is a youth development and outdoor learning charity which has been improving the skills and life chances of young people from disadvantaged backgrounds since 1956. Enabling young people, particularly those from disadvantaged backgrounds, to change their lives at sea and contribute to the maritime sector and the blue economy.

How Does Tall Ships Youth Trust Help Young People?

They introduced their three-voyage programme of Exploration, Empowerment and Leadership at the start of 2023. This innovative approach combines outdoor learning in an ocean environment, with personal development, social development and practical life skills. It builds on their highly effective single-voyage intervention and offers the young people increasingly longer and more challenging voyages as the progress. It supports young people on their journey to adulthood, by equipping them with life skills and employability skills which will sustain them throughout their lives.

The young people they support come from across the UK and are facing adversity in their daily lives, this is from personal circumstances and lived experiences, to additional needs that at times are not met. Post-Covid, the world is far more aware of the individual challenges faced by so many, as more and more young people struggle with their mental and physical health, neurodiversity, barriers to learning, as well as aspects of geographical, economic and social disadvantage.

In 2023, they took 1,203 young people from across the UK voyaging. 80% of these young people were from disadvantaged backgrounds and 24% from the global majority. They had an equal gender split, with 51% of their voyagers being male and 49% female. Find out more about their work on their Website and on Facebook.

The Impact of Tall Ships

90% of those voyaging on Exploration voyages in 2023 said they had ‘learned a skill that could be built into their everyday lives’.

94% of the voyages on Empowerment voyages in 2023 said ‘they felt more able to take responsibility for self and others’.
