Standing With Survivors: Why We’re Championing West Mercia Women’s Aid This January
Every now and then, you come across a charity that doesn’t just do good — it quietly changes lives. West Mercia Women’s Aid is one of those charities.
This January, as part of our January Charity Poll, we’re giving our community the chance to decide where 20% of our monthly profits will go. West Mercia Women’s Aid is one of the organisations in the running, and honestly? They’re doing work that deserves to be seen, supported, and celebrated.
Because behind every statistic is a person. A mother. A child. A friend. Someone who just needed a door to open when everything else felt closed. If you want to find out more about their vital work, then read on and see if they get your vote this January!

So, Who Are West Mercia Women’s Aid?
West Mercia Women’s Aid (WMWA) supports women, children, and families affected by domestic abuse across the West Mercia region: Herefordshire, Worcestershire, Shropshire, and Telford & Wrekin.
And the need is real. In the UK, up to one in four women will experience domestic abuse in their lifetime. That’s not an abstract number — it’s neighbours, colleagues, relatives, people we pass every day without knowing their story.
WMWA exists so those stories don’t end in silence.
A Mission Built on Respect and Strength
At its core, West Mercia Women’s Aid is about empowerment. Not telling survivors what to do. Not rushing them. But walking alongside them while they rebuild, at their own pace.
Their work is grounded in respect, inclusivity, and choice. They recognise that abuse doesn’t happen in a vacuum — it’s rooted in inequality, power, and silence. And their feminist, survivor-led approach ensures every person is treated with dignity, autonomy, and compassion.
No judgement. No pressure. Just support.
What Do They Actually Do?
WMWA offers a wide network of free, confidential services — because support should never come with barriers.
A Safe Voice on the End of the Line
Their confidential helpline gives survivors somewhere to breathe, talk, and be heard. Sometimes that first call is the hardest step. Sometimes it’s the bravest.
Refuge and Safe Accommodation
When home isn’t safe anymore, WMWA provides refuge spaces where women and children can begin again — somewhere secure, calm, and protective.
Recovery and Community Support
Healing doesn’t stop once someone is safe. Through counselling, outreach, and peer support, survivors are helped to rebuild confidence, independence, and hope.
Independent Domestic Violence Advisers (IDVAs)
IDVAs stand beside survivors in complex systems — courts, healthcare, housing — making sure no one has to navigate it all alone. They also support young people experiencing abuse in their own relationships.
Support for Children and Young People
Children carry more than we often realise. WMWA’s specialist programmes help them understand emotions, rebuild self-esteem, and learn what healthy relationships should look like.
Training and Consultancy
They also work with professionals and organisations, helping communities recognise abuse earlier and respond better — because prevention matters just as much as recovery.
Why This Charity Poll Really Matters
This isn’t just about choosing a name on a list.
The charity that wins will receive 20% of our January profits — funding that could directly expand life-saving services.
That could mean:
- More helpline hours for someone who finally finds the courage to call.
- More refuge resources for families escaping overnight.
- More support for children learning that love shouldn’t hurt.
- More training so workplaces, schools, and services know how to respond.
Your vote becomes part of that story.
