Vote for Action for M.E. And Help Improve The Lives of People in the UK Living With the Debilitating Condition M.E.
Who Are Action for M.E.?
Action for M.E. works to empower people with M.E. to fulfil their potential and secure the care and support they need, while working towards a greater understanding of the illness and ultimately a cure. Their vision is a world without M.E.
Myalgic Encephalomyelitis (M.E.) is a chronic, fluctuating, neurological condition that causes symptoms affecting many body systems, more commonly the nervous and immune systems. M.E. affects an estimated 250,000 people in the UK. People with M.E. experience debilitating pain, fatigue and a range of other symptoms associated with post-exertional malaise, the body and brain’s inability to recover after expending even small amounts of energy.
What Do Action for M.E. Do?
They are the only charity in the UK supporting people of all ages with M.E. Alongside providing targeted information, support and advice to children, young people and adults, they also offer peer-support services that reduce the isolation that so often comes with M.E. Their Information, Support and Advocacy service provides support with issues from housing and healthcare to benefits, and works with people with M.E. to empower them to advocate for themselves, to ensure they are heard and can access the support they deserve. Tom, who recently contacted the charity's team for advice about benefits, said:
“I can’t articulate how much I appreciated just talking to someone who didn’t imply that it was my own fault, or that I was making it up. The constant grind of having to explain that I cannot accept short notice appointments due to my condition makes me feel unseen. Talking to someone who just treated me like a human being and not someone who was lazy or made of glass was such a positive experience for me as it so rarely happens.”
They also aim to inspire action and invest in change. They work closely with professionals and policy-makers to improve access to appropriate care and support services, and collaborate with scientists, patients and clinicians to move biomedical research forward. They are co-leading DecodeME, the world’s largest M.E. DNA study.
Why Action for M.E Needs Your Help:
They need your help, now more than ever!
There is already a huge gap in services for people with M.E. Action for M.E. support services are oversubscribed. With the likely increase in post viral illness, including M.E., as a result of contracting Covid-19, they are deeply concerned that people with M.E. will not get the support that they need.
One way you can help is by voting for Action for M.E. in our December charity poll. Cast your vote for Action for M.E. and help bring hope to adults, children and young people with M.E. and their families, now and in the future. Thank you.
