How Your Vote for LionAid Ltd can Help save LIONS which are facing extinction in the wild
LionAid are taking part in our charity poll this October, hoping to win a donation which will enable them to aid the conservation of lions and assist in communities where lion/human conflict needs to be managed without causing harm to either party. LionAid help lions and humans to exist together peacefully through their initiatives, ensuring that human/lion conflicts do not lead to the extinction of more lion populations. Your vote can help them in their incredible work, so find out more below and see why they need your support today.
What Does LionAid Do?
Lions are at risk Lions are the top predator in ecosystems. Lose lions and you lose ecosystem stability and function. Lions are already extinct in 25 African nations and clinging to survival in a further 10 in small and scattered populations.
This means that only 14 African countries have lions today. To lose the lion in Africa would be considered as another in our long list of failures to keep natural populations of large predators alive. Conservationists say most natural populations of lions will be gone in the next ten to twenty years – hunted, poisoned, speared, trapped, slaughtered – if things don’t change. LionAid are working to make things really change. In the past 50 years, existing approaches to lion conservation have allowed 186,000 lions to become bleached bones or tanned skins. This is why LionAid are taking a different approach, with new ideas and new ways to protect and conserve the remaining 13,356 lions.
One of the important initiatives that LionAid is undertaking is the LionAid Human/Lion conflict mitigation project in Merrueshi, Kenya.
Here is a video they filmed a while ago when they were there in Merrueshi with the communities they are helping. It explains what the project is and how it is saving both wildlife and transforming the lives of these rural communities:
Please watch the above video link. It can show you where the project is, who they are helping and why it matters so much. It will transport you into rural Kenya and show you the realities of life for these wonderful, impoverished rural communities and how, with your help, they can save lions from being killed. It matters…..
How Does Your Vote Help?
They have so far equipped six villages (manyattas) with lifesaving lights. They now need to equip the seventh manyatta and your vote today CAN HELP THEM DO JUST THAT.
What difference does this project make:
LionAid’s Merrueshi Maasai Community project exceeds all expectations
“Imagine fearfully the night falling and then rolling the dice as to the chance that your livestock livelihood could be destroyed?”
1. LionAid can report ZERO predation on livestock in Maasai manyattas (villages) equipped with anti-predator solar lights, and ZERO predator retaliation killings in the area bordering Amboseli National Park in Kenya via their joint community programme.
2. The “insurance herd” to compensate other manyattas for losses has grown to over 500 animals and is expected to increase.
3. School children in households equipped with lights are excelling in their schools.
4. The LionAid – Merrueshi Maasai community collaboration is exceeding all expectations for predator protection and improvement of rural community lives.
