Support the Community in Leeds this May 2019 and Vote for St Vincent's
The St Vincent’s Support Centre is a community hub in East Leeds. The centre provides different services and activities to vulnerable and disadvantaged people to give them support and skills to build a better life for themselves and their family.
St Vincent’s focuses on each individual person and gives them the help they need to tackle issues they are currently facing. They do this through services and activities such as Debt Advice, Counselling, Migrant Support, ESOL classes, Employability Support, Volunteering opportunities, a Friendship Group, a Cooking Group, a ‘Good Mood’ Group and an Arts and Conversation Group.
They also have a community café that offers affordable food for the community. In the café they have a pay it forward scheme where people can pop spare change in a pot and that can be used to give away free meals/ hot drinks to people who may not otherwise be able to afford this. They have a charity shop that sells goods at a very reasonable price for the local community to benefit from.
Across all of these services they rely heavily on volunteers and they run a supported volunteer scheme for vulnerable adults / people with additional needs to have one to one support throughout their volunteering journey from a trained volunteer/member of staff. This means that they can really focus on developing the skills and confidence of these volunteers so that they can go on to have success in the future.
What Do They Do to Help the Community?
Along with all of these opportunities and services St Vincent’s offer emergency support through their Emergency Food provision. They have a small food store cupboard which is run by volunteers and operates through donations. They can offer a food parcel to someone who is in need and they put the parcel together to be able to last someone/a family three days. Unfortunately they do not operate as a food bank as they do not have the capacity to offer that much stock. However, they will always help people who need it and give out food parcels whenever they can.
St Vincent’s prides itself on being the only charity across Leeds that offers this many services and all completely free. They look to expand every day and are always looking for ways that they can improve the lives of the community. The centre is a very welcoming and friendly place and anyone seeking any service is greeted with a non-judgemental attitude by everyone who works there. Where they can they run schemes throughout the school holidays in an attempt to tackle Holiday Hunger. Through the Summer holiday they run a ‘stay and play’ scheme where local children can go to the centre have their lunch (for free) and get involved with some crafts and activities. The support centre endeavours to help anybody and everyone who needs it – there are no restrictions on who can visit the centre and who can access our support.
