Vote for the British Hen Welfare Trust and Improve the Lives of Laying Birds
We’re delighted to have the British Hen Welfare Trust taking part in the My Favourite Voucher Codes Charity Poll this August, giving you a completely free way to help this amazing charity to improve the lives of British hens.
Their work includes rehoming thousands of birds every year, advocating for these birds legally and publicly and educating the public to help people make informed choices. It only takes a few moments, but winning the poll could provide valuable funding towards their vital work.
Find out more below about their incredible work helping these beautiful birds, and see how your vote can make a difference this August.
Who Is the British Hen Welfare Trust?
The British Hen Welfare Trust was established in 2005 with a mission to improve the lives of commercial laying hens.
Their story began with their founder, Jane Howorth, whose determination to make a difference to hen welfare eventually led to the creation of the UK’s first dedicated hen charity. Since then, their work has grown enormously.
Today, they work with farmers, volunteers, veterinary professionals, schools, consumers and other organisations to create meaningful improvements in laying hen welfare.
They are perhaps best known for rehoming ex-commercial laying hens. When hens reach the end of their commercially productive lives, they give thousands of them the opportunity to leave the farming system and become much-loved pets.
To put the scale of that work into perspective, they have now found homes for more than one million hens! Their current network includes around 50 collection hubs and more than 1,400 volunteers, helping them to rehome tens of thousands of hens each year.
For the hens themselves, this can mark the beginning of a completely new chapter.
Commercial hens are generally around 17 months old when they come to them for rehoming. Once adopted, they can discover the pleasures of retirement, from scratching and dust bathing to exploring their surroundings and settling into a new flock.
Rehoming is a huge part of what they do, but their work goes much further.
Improving Hen Welfare Beyond Rehoming
They want to create lasting improvements for laying hens, which means looking at the bigger picture as well as helping individual birds.
Education plays an important role. They help people understand more about where eggs come from and how their shopping decisions can influence animal welfare. They have also developed educational resources for schools, helping younger generations learn about hens, animal welfare and responsible choices.
Their approach has always been based on positive, practical change. Rather than working against the British egg industry, they believe that constructive relationships with farmers and others involved in egg production can help improve welfare in a way that works in the real world.
They also want pet hens to receive the same consideration that people naturally give to other companion animals. Their work around hen health helps owners understand their birds better, while supporting research and improvements in veterinary knowledge.
Every part of this work has the same goal: giving laying hens the respect and quality of life they deserve.
And now, they want to use what they have learnt to help another small but frequently forgotten bird.
This Summer, They're Turning Their Attention to Laying Quail
At British Hen Welfare Trust, their 2026 Summer Appeal focuses on commercial laying quail.
Quail may be tiny, but their welfare needs are anything but insignificant.
Commercial quail can be kept in caged environments that prevent them from properly carrying out natural behaviours. One particularly troubling example involves their instinctive response when frightened. Quail naturally shoot upwards when startled, but cages can prevent this behaviour and put the birds at risk of injury.
Compared with laying hens, the welfare of commercially farmed quail has received relatively little attention. This incredible charity want to help change that.
That starts with understanding the problem properly.
They are working in partnership with FAI Farms Ltd on research into laying quail welfare and the changes that could make a genuine difference. The aim is to develop a welfare improvement roadmap that can be used to identify practical steps towards improving standards for laying quail on a much wider scale.
The British Hen Welfare Trusts contribution to this research programme is £28,000. It is an ambitious project, but its potential reach is enormous.
Rather than helping one bird at a time, the knowledge gained through this work has the potential to contribute towards better welfare standards for laying quail on a far greater scale.
That is why winning the My Favourite Voucher Codes Charity Poll this August would mean so much to them!
How Could Winning the Poll Help?
If they receive the most votes in the August poll, the British Hen Welfare Trust will receive 20% of My Favourite Voucher Codes’ profits for the month.
The funding would support their work to improve the lives of laying birds, including their current research into laying quail welfare.
Research is essential if they want to create evidence-based change. By learning more about the environments in which laying quail are kept, their behavioural needs and the welfare problems they face, they can help establish what improvements are needed.
A vote for them this August is therefore about much more than simply helping our charity raise money.
It is a chance to support work which could contribute towards a better future for laying birds.
And because voting is free, absolutely anyone can get involved.
