There are important exclusions. Blacks states that the signup offer applies to eligible products only and excludes sale items, gift cards and selected brands. Its current general brand-exclusion list includes names such as Garmin, Weber, Stanley, Ninja, EcoFlow, Shokz, Thule, Suunto, Dometic, Oakley and Ray-Ban.

That means the first-order percentage should still be compared with the existing price. If the walking boots, GPS watch or tent you want is already reduced or belongs to an excluded brand, another Blacks promo code or the sale price may be more useful.

Check Blacks multibuy and sale prices before using a voucher

Blacks runs automatic multibuy promotions alongside conventional voucher discounts. Current examples include buy one get one half price on selected camping food, camping furniture and socks.

These are most useful when you already need more than one qualifying item. A DofE expedition shop, for example, might include several pairs of walking socks or multiple camping meals, while a family camping order could include more than one chair.

Blacks says its multibuy discount is applied automatically once the required eligible products are in the basket, with the reduction applied to the cheapest qualifying item first. Before using a Blacks voucher code, compare the automatic multibuy total because general voucher promotions cannot normally be combined with another offer.

Do not add an unwanted second product simply to trigger the promotion. The multibuy only saves money if both items were already useful to you.

Buying DofE kit at Blacks can unlock a stronger discount

Before relying on a public Blacks discount code, compare the DofE price on the exact kit you need. Blacks' normal promotional exclusions still matter, so do not assume every brand or sale product will qualify simply because you are a DofE participant or Leader.

Student, Blue Light and Health Service discounts at Blacks

The redemption route differs by organisation. Blue Light Card members access their offer through the Blue Light Card website, Health Service Discount members through the relevant website or app, and students through the appropriate student-membership route. Free Blacks delivery: when the £95 threshold actually saves money

Blacks currently charges £4.99 for standard UK delivery and provides free standard delivery when a qualifying order exceeds £95. Some large items, including certain bikes, can be excluded from the normal free-delivery service.

The threshold is useful when your basket naturally exceeds £95, which is easy to do with walking boots, tents, premium waterproofs or several pieces of camping equipment. It is less useful if you are considering adding something you do not need simply to avoid a £4.99 delivery charge.

For example, if your basket is £88, spending another £12 on an unnecessary item to cross the threshold costs more than paying standard delivery. If the extra item was already on your shopping list, reaching £95 can make sense. Compare the final amount paid, not just whether delivery becomes free.

Which Blacks products are most worth checking for a discount?

A percentage saving becomes more noticeable on higher-value outdoor equipment, but the product category also changes which alternative offers are worth checking.

• Walking boots and trail footwear: compare the exact size and model with current sale pricing, particularly if you are unsure about fit and may need to return them.

Large items also need more care. Blacks states that large tents cannot be returned through its normal returns portal; they can instead be taken to Blacks, Millets or GO Outdoors stores, or a collection can be arranged for a fee. There are also restricted products that cannot follow the normal returns route, so check the policy before buying technical or safety-related equipment where returning the item could be important.

Blacks publishes unusually clear general voucher rules, which makes it easier to work out why a promotion has not reduced your basket.

• Sale products are excluded from general voucher promotions unless a specific offer says otherwise.
