Support babies, children and young people and their families by voting for Children North East in the May My Favourite Voucher Codes charity poll
Every month, My Favourite Voucher Codes selects four charities to be in with a chance of securing a donation to the vital work they deliver. Children North East are a charity that works with babies, children and young people, helping families who are experiencing hardship. Children North East won charity poll back in February 2023, and we are very pleased to announce that we are working with Children NE again in our May 2024 charity poll! We are excited to be working with this incredible charity again, and to support the work they do for children and families in need.
Who Are Children North East?
Children North East is an established charity in the North East, celebrating its 130 years of charitable service in 2021. The charity began as a small area of work by founders John Watson and John Lunn, who led regular trips for 120 vulnerable Newcastle children to enjoy the beach. Since then, it has grown and developed over the last 130 years to a range of dedicated support services for babies, children, young people and families across the North East facing the most challenging circumstances.
How do Children North East Help Babies, Children and Young People?
The work of Children North East is varied, offering a range of life-changing services and support in key areas of need, such as mental health, youth work, domestic abuse and help for families in crisis. We aim to be there at the moments they can make the biggest impact.. Our purpose is for all babies, children and young people to be healthy and happy and to grow up feeling safe and loved, resilient to challenges they may face and be valued and confident.
Children North East have supported 4,544 babies, children and young people, and provided targeted support for 884 families. There have been over 65 projects delivered by their team and there are currently a huge 1,456 people in their supporter community.
Children North East recognise there is a lot of power in play, both as a way to learn and a way to connect. Yet COVID lockdowns and the subsequent time spent away from school made learning and engaging with other children more difficult than ever for their young children. In the summer of 2021, their Playful Lives team took play on the road, bringing fun-filled sessions to gardens in Newcastle and hosting playtime at their Cowgate Community Hub. Activities like this helped children grow in confidence among their peers and become ready and excited to start their journey into school life.
Every school holiday, Children North East are supporting children and young people who have experienced or observed domestic abuse. Through the DARE programme, children are given a safe space to process trauma and confusion from past experiences. This much needed work helps build resilience in children and protects them by giving them the understanding that this shouldn't happen to them again and provides the important knowledge of what to do if it does.
Over the years, their youth drop-in spaces, allotment and other regular venues have been a bustle of activity; providing safe spaces, friendship and access to professional support. For many children and young people Children North East have been there to provide these young people with their only source of a hot meal each week.
The diverse work of Children North East means that they are there from the earliest opportunity even supporting new parents through pregnancy and early infancy with their Crisis Intervention Service and Targeted Family Support, right up to early adulthood where their CAN programme supports 18-25’s not in employment, education or training (NEET) who are struggling to overcome the barriers impacting upon their independence. Our one-to-one mentoring service makes a real difference to improving their wellbeing, self-esteem and confidence which enables them to have the best chance of suitable employment or training in the future.
Children North East is an innovative charity keeping babies, children, young people and families at the heart of all they do, and motivates them to challenge thinking and policy around the issues that impact them the most.
With the impact of COVID and now a cost of living crisis, the families in need of their support are growing in number rapidly.
With your help, they won't stop until every baby, child and young person has the healthy, happy start in life they deserve.
