Your Vote for Speech and Language UK Could Help Change Young Lives
This August, Speech and Language UK is taking part in the My Favourite Voucher Codes charity poll. They’re one of four charities in the running to win 20% of My Favourite Voucher Codes’ profits this summer! Read on to see how your vote could help children who struggle with talking and understanding words face the future with confidence.
What does Speech and Language UK do?
Right now, for a record-high two million children in the UK, learning to talk and understand words can feel like an impossible hurdle. Too often, they miss out on the support they need to thrive – they fall behind at school, struggle to make friends, feel isolated and misunderstood.
But it doesn’t have to be this way. With the right support, every child can face the future with confidence, including those with speech and language challenges. Speech and Language UK exists to give children and young people the skills they need so they aren’t left behind, waiting to be understood. The charity does this by creating tools for schools and nurseries, giving advice and guidance to families, and putting pressure on politicians. They run two special schools, too.
What’s Speech and Language UK Working on Right Now?
Speech and Language UK’s vision is to build a world where every child who is facing challenges with talking and understanding words can look to the future with confidence. To make that happen, they’re working with children, families, teachers, early years educators, local authorities, businesses, and others on projects like:
· Advice line: Speech and Language UK’s free advice line gives worried families the opportunity to speak to a speech and language advisor and get guidance and support by phone or email. Waiting lists for speech and language therapists can be long, so having access to this sort of advice can be invaluable. Last year, more than 1,000 families used the advice line.
· Talk for Work: The organisation’s Talk for Work programme is designed to help pupils aged 14 to 18 who struggle with talking and understanding words get ready for the workplace. They’ve been working with schools, colleges, and employers in Kent and East Sussex to share the programme with 40 young people in the last few months.
· Early Years Professional Development Programme: This UK-wide, government-funded project aimed to support early years staff who work with children aged two to four. Speech and Language UK delivered more than 9,000 webinars as part of the project, helping more than 14,500 professionals improve their approaches. The impact of this was huge – benefiting more than 100,000 children across the UK.
How does Speech and Language UK make a difference?
Speech and Language UK is having a big impact. Last year they supported 380,582 children, young people and families nationwide, through their free advice line, online progress checker, and lots of other projects. What’s more, they reached more than 10,000 professionals with tools and training, and another 15,275 professionals used their online training offer. At their two special schools, Dawn House and Meath, 167 pupils got the personalised support they need to thrive.
Speech and Language UK provides vital help today and campaigns for a fairer future for every child. From developing tools to delivering family webinars, talking with government to sharing training and best practice, the organisation is making a big difference.
How will the donation help Speech and Language UK?
£200 could give 5 worried families the opportunity to talk to a specialist through Speech and Language UK’s free advice line. For families who stuck on waiting lists, struggling to get help for their children, this kind of guidance could be transformative.
Or, it could give 4 primary schools in the UK a set of tools they can use to support children when they’re struggling with talking and understanding words. The earlier children get help, the better. If they get the right support in their earliest years, it can have a life-changing impact.
How can I support Speech and Language UK?
In the UK, it’s estimated that 1 in 5 children have difficulties with talking and understanding words. That’s six children in the average classroom. With the right support, every child can thrive – and here’s how you can help make that happen:
1. Vote for Speech and Language UK in the charity poll!
2. Donate today. £10 could help a worried family join one of their early years webinars, so they can get vital support and advice.
3. Get fundraising. There are so many events and challenges to choose from. There’s something for everyone!
