Support the Vital Work of HEART UK This June and Cast Your Vote for Them in This Month’s Charity Poll
Over half of adults in the UK have raised cholesterol levels, which can lead to heart disease. As the UK’s only cholesterol charity, HEART UK works to prevent early disease and deaths from cholesterol and blood fat (lipid) related conditions. Their primary aim is to encourage people to get to know and understand their cholesterol and blood fat levels, so that appropriate action can be taken as early as possible.
About HEART UK
High cholesterol is a major factor that contributes towards heart attacks and strokes. HEART UK works to prevent premature deaths as a result of high cholesterol, and they do so in a number of ways.
Support: HEART UK provides support and advice to patients, families and health professionals. Their unique cholesterol helpline supports thousands of people each year, including families who have lost a loved one as a result of high cholesterol. In addition, they provide free information leaflets to GP surgeries across the UK, and their website is visited by over 2 million people every year, in search of expert information and advice.
Research: In addition, HEART UK also provides educational grants so that more research can be done into preventing heart attacks and strokes caused by high cholesterol. They also provide specialist education and training for GPs, nurses, specialists and dieticians in order to ensure patients receive the best possible care.
Campaigns: The charity also runs regular campaigns to support patients and healthcare professionals. This helps patients towards receiving a proper diagnosis, along with getting the best possible care and treatments. HEART UK also aims to raise awareness of high cholesterol and Familial Hypercholesterolaemia (FH).
What is Familial Hypercholesterolaemia (FH)?
FH is one of the most common inherited conditions and can lead to very high cholesterol. In a person with FH, cholesterol levels are often doubled, but sometimes four times higher than the general population. If left untreated, it can lead to heart disease at an early age. Early detection of the disease is important, as the earlier the treatment, the more effective it is.
How is HEART UK Funded?
HEART UK receives no government funding and relies on donations to continue their vital work to prevent premature deaths caused by high cholesterol. It costs £52 to fund every enquiry their Cholesterol Helpline receives, and over 85% of the charity’s income goes towards patient care. During these challenging times, they are in need of support now more than ever, which is why we are delighted to be supporting them for our June charity poll.
