What Support Do Families of Children Living with Serious Illness need? Why We're Supporting Together for Short Lives This July
A hospital appointment in one city. A specialist consultation somewhere else. Time away from work. School arrangements to juggle. Travel expenses that just keep mounting up, and medication schedules that are stuck on the fridge.
For many families caring for a child with a serious illness, these aren't occasional disruptions, they're part of everyday life.
As Charity Coordinator at My Favourite Voucher Codes, I spend a lot of time learning about the incredible charities nominated for our monthly polls. Some tackle challenges that affect huge numbers of people. Others support individuals and families facing situations most of us never imagine encountering ourselves.
Together for Short Lives is one of those charities.
They're taking part in our July 2026 Charity Poll, but before encouraging people to vote, I wanted to look beyond the charity itself and understand the issue at the heart of its work. Why do families need this support? What gaps does the charity help fill? And why does demand for these services continue to grow?

The Challenges Families Don't Always Talk About
The impact on families when a child is diagnosed with a serious illness is vast, and extends far beyond solely the medical aspects of care.
There are practical considerations that quickly become part of everyday life, for example some families find themselves travelling long distances to specialist hospitals, and many need to adapt their homes or accommodate medical equipment. Alongside travel and home accommodations, many families also face difficult decisions around employment and caring responsibilities.
At the same time, there are still everyday things that need to be done including school runs to complete, birthdays to celebrate, meals to cook and bills to pay. Parents often find themselves balancing ordinary responsibilities alongside circumstances that are anything but ordinary.
Over the years, one thing I've noticed when speaking with charities is that support is often available, but families don't always know where to find it. A service may exist locally. Specialist advice may be available. Financial support may be accessible through another organisation. Yet discovering what's available can be difficult when families are already managing so much.
That's one reason charities such as Together for Short Lives play such an important role.
What Is Children's Palliative Care?
Many people assume palliative care is only something that comes into the picture towards the end of a person's life. That's understandable, because it's often how the term is used in the media.
Every child deserves many moments of happiness together with their loved ones. Children’s Palliative Care helps children and families live as fully as possible from the moment of diagnosis, through a child’s life, death and in bereavement. That might mean support with symptoms and pain management. It could mean giving parents access to advice, helping families take a short break from caring responsibilities, supporting brothers and sisters who are struggling emotionally, or simply making sure people know where to turn when they need help.
Why Demand for Support Continues to Grow
One of the most interesting aspects of this issue is that advances in healthcare have changed the landscape significantly.
Research commissioned by Together for Short Lives found that the prevalence of life-limiting conditions among children and young people in England increased substantially between 2001/02 and 2017/18.
At first glance, that statistic can seem surprising.
Part of the explanation is positive. Medical advances mean more children with complex conditions are living longer than would previously have been possible. That progress should absolutely be celebrated.
However, it also means more families need ongoing support over longer periods of time. Demand for specialist services, children's hospices and family support networks continues to grow as a result.
The challenges have evolved, but they haven't disappeared.
Where Families Find Support
Support for families often comes from a combination of healthcare providers, local services, community organisations and specialist charities.
No single organisation can provide everything a family might need.
What makes Together for Short Lives particularly valuable is that it works across several areas at once. The charity supports families directly while also helping strengthen the wider network of children's palliative care services.
Much of that work happens behind the scenes.
The public may never see the research being shared, the guidance being developed or the conversations taking place with decision-makers. Yet those efforts can influence the quality and availability of care for families across the country.
How Together for Short Lives Helps
Together for Short Lives describes its role as supporting families, uniting the sector and campaigning for change.
In practice, that means helping families access information and support while also working alongside children's hospices, healthcare professionals and policymakers.
Their work includes:
● Providing practical information and guidance
● Connecting families with support services
● Supporting children's hospice and palliative care services
● Sharing research and evidence
● Developing guidance and standards
● Bringing professionals together to share knowledge
● Campaigning for improvements in care and support
One aspect of the charity's work that I particularly value is its willingness to listen to families themselves.
When the same challenges are raised repeatedly by parents and carers, those experiences can help identify where services need improving. That doesn't just benefit families today. It can help shape better support for families in the future.
How Your Free Vote Can Help
Throughout July 2026, visitors to My Favourite Voucher Codes can vote for one of four nominated charities.
The charity receiving the most votes will receive 20% of our profits generated during the month.
Voting is completely free. No registration is required, and no personal details need to be submitted.
One reason our charity programme has remained such an important part of My Favourite Voucher Codes is that it allows people to support good causes while saving money on purchases they were already planning to make.
Many of our visitors are parents and families themselves. They're searching for savings on supermarket shopping, school uniforms, family holidays, household bills, mobile phones, laptops, insurance products and everyday essentials.
Every voucher used helps us continue supporting charitable causes through initiatives such as our monthly polls.

Final Thoughts
Most people will never need the services provided by organisations such as Together for Short Lives.
For families who do, however, access to the right support can make an enormous difference.
The more I learned about children's palliative care while researching this article, the more obvious it became that support isn't only about medical treatment. Families often need information, guidance, advocacy and practical help just as much as they need healthcare services.
Together for Short Lives exists to help ensure that support is available.
If you'd like to help them continue that work, please consider voting for them in our July 2026 Charity Poll and sharing the poll with others.
It costs nothing to vote.
The impact of winning could be felt by families across the UK.
