The best ways to save on TransPennine Express tickets

Compare a voucher against the Advance fare. TPE says eligible Advance tickets can save more than 50%, so a discounted Advance fare can sometimes beat a general voucher.

Use a Railcard where eligible. Most Railcards reduce qualifying fares by around a third, with different rules for families, seniors, veterans and other passenger groups.

Students should check the dedicated TPE offer. Students with a 16–25 Railcard can get up to 50% off qualifying Standard Advance and Airport Advance fares using the TPESTUDENT promotion.

Check NHS and education-worker offers. Verified schemes can reduce eligible Advance fares by 20% through the relevant employee-discount platforms.

Travelling as a group can change the price. TPE promotes discounted Advance travel for groups of three to nine, although its own pages currently show conflicting percentages, so use the fare displayed by the live booking system.

Book direct to avoid a booking fee. TPE says it does not charge one when you buy directly from its website.

When a cheaper TransPennine Express ticket can cost you more

Refund rules for dated Anytime and Off-Peak tickets also changed on 1 April 2026, with unused tickets normally needing to be refunded by 23:59 on the day before travel unless an exception applies.

Can you claim money back if your TransPennine Express train is delayed?

Yes. TPE's Delay Repay scheme applies when you arrive at least 15 minutes late, with compensation increasing according to the length of the delay. Claims normally need to be made within 28 days. If disruption means you decide not to travel at all, use the relevant ticket-refund process instead.
