Create Positive Change with Disability Rights UK and Vote for Equal Rights and Accessibility this June
Disability Rights UK are one of the amazing charities taking part in the My Favourite Voucher Codes charity poll this June. They are the leading charity in the UK who fight for the rights of disabled people and, as a Disabled Peoples Organisation (DPO), are led and run by Disabled people too. They work on a regional and national level, collaborating with organisations, businesses and lobbying the UK government to help improve accessibility and rights for disabled people. They also create and co-produce resources and guides that help Disabled people access the services they need. Find out all about how they do this below, and if you want to see them win 20% of our profits this month then don’t forget to vote for Disability Rights UK.
What Do Disability Rights UK Do?
At the heart of Disability Rights UK is helping Disabled people to have a more accessible, fair and inclusive life experience where the everyday barriers that they face can be overcome through intersectional change. From employment to education, transport to housing, there are several aspects of life where Disabled people are either not considered, not catered for or actively hindered, making their experience living within society much more challenging. Disability Rights UK therefore works with individuals, DPOs, organisations, businesses and the government to recognise and implement positive change to protect the rights of Disabled people and create a more inclusive society where all disabled people can access equal opportunities, participate in inclusive activities and live their life without imposed barriers.
The entire charity is staffed by Disabled people and is a pan-impairment organisation, so they have an in-depth and broad understanding of many different disabilities and how we can overcome the barriers society places in the way of all Disabled people, with a variety of impairments.
What Are Disability Rights UK Doing Now?
As the cost-of-living crisis continues to put individuals and families into financial crisis, and the debate over human rights policies is coming to the forefront of politics, Disability Rights UK are working hard to make sure Disabled people don’t fall through the cracks - a fact that is often unfortunately the case. They are working in the areas of:
-
Benefits
-
Poverty
-
Education
-
Energy Costs
-
Employment
-
Social Care
-
Housing
-
Election Access
-
Transport
-
Climate Change
-
Hate Crime
-
Rights and Justice
These are wide ranging topics but each one affects millions of Disabled people throughout the UK every day.
For example, the cuts to benefits over the past 15 years has had a great impact on Disabled people, forcing many more people to live in poverty, lose their independence and even lose their lives. Public transport has also become even more challenging for Disabled people and greatly impacted their ability to be independent, visit loved ones, access opportunities and go anywhere outside of their locality. Bus services being cut, cancelled trains, inaccessible booking systems, reduced passenger assistance and stations being inaccessible all play a part in putting up barriers for Disabled passengers and leads to a life of mobility restrictions and isolation.
Disability Rights UK bring these issues to light with local authorities, government bodies, businesses and organisations, and fights these systems, working to build a world that is accessible and liberatory for all Disabled and marginalised people.
Training for Businesses
Disability Rights UK also offers training courses and consultancy for businesses in the UK that want to help their businesses cater for Disabled staff and customers. These are bespoke courses, and they work with businesses to find out what they want to achieve and how they can help Disabled customers and staff to be included within their company, access products and have a positive experience. Their training courses often cover areas such as delivering disability awareness training, running user-testing apps, conducting access audits and giving advice on HR policies and procedures.
