How Much Does Professional Teeth Whitening Cost in the UK?
If you're thinking about having your teeth whitened professionally, one of the first things you'll probably notice is just how much prices vary. Some dentists charge a few hundred pounds, while others offer more expensive packages that include consultations, custom trays and whitening gel. But does paying more actually mean you're getting a better treatment, or could you be spending more than you need to?
That's what we've been looking into. We found UK dentists advertising supervised home-whitening treatments from £350, while SmileWhite charges £795 for its professional whitening package. We've compared published prices, checked what's included and looked at potential extra costs to help you work out where your money is best spent.
If SmileWhite is one of the options you're considering, our Smile White Voucher Codes page also carries an exclusive 10% discount on eligible purchases.

Professional Teeth Whitening Prices Compared: UK Providers
There's a sizeable difference between the cheapest and most expensive dentist-supervised home-whitening packages we found. We checked a selection of dental practices that publish their prices, including independent providers rather than relying entirely on one dental chain.
Most of the home-whitening services below use dentist-prescribed gel and custom trays, but the exact contents and appointments aren't necessarily identical.
Published price sources: White House Dental, Ethicare Dental, Bupa Bangor, Bupa Wells, Bow Lane Dental, Bupa Sale and SmileWhite. Prices checked October 2026. A plus sign denotes a published starting price.
These seven examples show why getting a second quotation can be worthwhile. White House Dental advertises home whitening for £350, compared with £795 at SmileWhite: a difference of £445 before any discounts or additional charges. That doesn't establish which treatment offers better value. We also need to know what is included.
The practices were selected because they publish identifiable prices and treatment information. They do not represent a calculated UK average, and their prices may not be available at another branch or location.
Is At-Home Teeth Whitening Cheaper Than In-Practice Treatment?
Often, but not always. Dentist-supervised home whitening involves professionally prescribed gel and trays worn at home. In-practice whitening takes place at the dental surgery and may use a different treatment method. Both are private dental services, rather than ordinary shop-bought whitening products.
Bupa provides useful comparisons because individual practices advertise prices for both methods.
Sources: the Bupa Bangor, Wells and Sale practice price lists linked above. Figures are starting prices for different treatment methods, not identical treatment courses.
At Bupa Sale, the advertised difference is £290. At Bangor it's £120. That variation is more useful than assuming in-practice treatment always costs a fixed amount extra.
The NHS explains how dentist-prescribed home kits and dental-surgery whitening differ. The choice should take account of the dentist's assessment, the method used and how much treatment is included. Paying more for an in-practice appointment isn't automatically necessary for everyone.
What's Included in Professional Teeth Whitening — and What Costs Extra?
We found more meaningful differences once we looked beyond the prices.
White House Dental Practice advertises a £350 home-whitening package including custom trays, four whitening-gel syringes and a review appointment. Its published fees also list additional Boutique whitening gel at £20 per syringe and a new-patient examination from £75. The practice does not clearly establish on that price page whether every whitening customer must pay a separate examination fee. Source: White House Dental fees.
Ethicare Dental advertises £395–£445 for home whitening. It confirms that custom trays, whitening gel and checks are covered, while new patients requiring an examination pay £85 separately. That means a new patient paying the advertised examination charge could face £480–£530 in total for those items. Other necessary dental treatment, if any, would need to be quoted separately. Source: Ethicare Dental treatment and prices.
Bow Lane Dental Group lists home whitening trays and gel for £480. It separately lists a £100 new-patient consultation, including two X-rays if clinically necessary. Whether that consultation is required for a particular whitening customer needs to be confirmed. Source: Bow Lane Dental fees.
These are the details that can make a difference to the final bill. Before buying, check whether the quote includes your dental assessment, custom trays, the full course of whitening gel and any necessary review appointments. If you might want to refresh your whitening later, find out what additional gel or replacement trays cost.
Is SmileWhite Professional Teeth Whitening Worth £795?
SmileWhite is more expensive than the other dentist-supervised home-whitening packages in our selection. We shouldn't ignore that. But its treatment package does contain several defined services.
According to SmileWhite, the £795 price includes an in-person dental health assessment with X-rays and 3D scans, two custom-made trays, four syringes of prescription 16% carbamide peroxide gel and in-clinic consultations with a partner dentist. The trays are manufactured after the assessment and collected through the dental practice. Source: SmileWhite treatment details and FAQs.

There is an interesting comparison with White House Dental: both advertise four syringes of whitening gel and custom trays. White House lists its package at £350, including a review appointment; SmileWhite lists £795 and explicitly includes its clinical assessment and 3D scans. The published descriptions do not establish that every clinical element, whitening system or treatment outcome is equivalent.
For somebody primarily concerned with price, the independent dental practices are well worth checking. SmileWhite may appeal to shoppers who prefer its defined package and partner-dentist arrangement, particularly where the exclusive discount applies. We wouldn't claim its higher price produces better whitening results without independent clinical evidence.
Are Shop-Bought Teeth Whitening Kits a Cheaper Alternative?
They can be considerably cheaper to purchase, but that's not the same as getting an equivalent service.
Professional whitening involves a dental assessment and appropriately prescribed treatment. The NHS warns that whitening products bought online or from pharmacies may be less effective and could harm teeth or gums. It recommends receiving whitening treatment through a dental professional. Source: NHS teeth whitening guidance.
A low-cost whitening toothpaste or retail product therefore shouldn't be presented as a direct substitute for a professionally prescribed course. It's reasonable to look at cheaper options, but clinical suitability and safety matter alongside price.

How Can You Save Money on Professional Teeth Whitening?
Start by comparing actual quotations, rather than choosing a provider from its advertised starting price. We found professional home-whitening packages at several price points, with different levels of detail about included appointments and materials.
A few practical checks can prevent overspending. Ask whether the examination is included, how much gel comes with the kit and whether follow-up appointments are covered. At Ethicare, for example, the separately advertised new-patient examination changes the initial amount a new customer may need to budget. At White House Dental, the published £20 price for an extra gel syringe makes a potential future expense easier to understand.
Discounts are another consideration, but only after establishing the treatment you actually want. We have an exclusive 10% SmileWhite discount supplied directly by the merchant. If it applies to the advertised £795 package, that represents a £79.50 saving and a potential final price of £715.50, subject to the offer's terms and successful application.
You can find the current saving and its conditions on our Smile White Voucher Codes page. We also explain how we test and review voucher codes.
Even after that reduction, SmileWhite would still be more expensive than several of the published home-whitening options we examined. Whether the difference is worthwhile depends on the treatment inclusions, any additional charges and the individual dental assessment.
Professional Teeth Whitening: Frequently Asked Questions
Is professional teeth whitening available on the NHS?
No. Teeth whitening is a cosmetic treatment and is not available on the NHS, so it must be paid for privately. The NHS teeth whitening guide confirms this.
How long does professional teeth whitening last?
Whitening isn't permanent. The NHS says results may last around three years if you follow your dentist's advice, but this varies between individuals. Before paying, ask what future maintenance might involve and whether additional gel or appointments would cost extra. Source: NHS.
Does teeth whitening work on crowns, veneers or fillings?
Whitening is designed to lighten natural teeth, not dental restorations such as crowns or veneers. Existing fillings may also remain a different shade. If you have visible dental restorations, discuss the likely appearance with your dentist before buying treatment. Source: NHS teeth whitening guidance.
Can professional teeth whitening cause sensitivity?
Yes. Temporary tooth sensitivity and irritation of the gums are recognised possible side effects. A dentist should assess whether whitening is suitable and explain what to do if discomfort occurs. The NHS explains the potential side effects.
