Three of the UK’s top supermarkets were recently compared for the cost of a typical weekly grocery shop. Sainsbury’s, Ocado and Tesco were the three supermarkets involved and the findings were actually quite surprising. While Ocado offered free delivery, it was found to have the highest total even after the voucher code had been applied. The total came to £143.56. Tesco’s came second with a total of £116.71 after Tesco voucher codes had been applied. Sainsbury’s on the other hand came first with a total of £110.54. This was after delivery charges and Sainsbury’s voucher codes had been applied. In comparison to Ocado, that’s a pretty big saving for the same groceries.

The Rise of the Voucher Code

It’s no surprise that consumers have turned to promo codes to help pay for their weekly shopping. The Telegraph recently reported it’s estimated that the average consumer spends around £96 per week, or £5,000 per year on groceries. This is a staggering amount. If voucher codes help to save just a little bit of money then they’re worthwhile. It’s thought that the number of voucher codes being redeemed in 2014 will be around £1.8 billion. This is an increase on £1.6 billion last year. As the cost of groceries continues to rise so too will supermarket voucher codes.
