Help Provide Veterinary Care to Street Dogs in Sri Lanka with WECare Worldwide
Introducing WECare Worldwide, one of the incredible charities participating in the My Favourite Voucher Codes charity poll this March. Set up by a veterinarian after seeing the desperate state of street dogs in Sri Lanka, WECare now provides high standard veterinary treatment as well as vaccine and neuter programmes in the country. Find out more about their work and see why WECare needs your vote this March.
Who Are WECare Worldwide and What Do They Do?
WECare was founded in 2014 by UK veterinarian Dr Janey Lowes after she experienced first hand the plight of some three million street dogs whilst on holiday in Sri Lanka. Next to none of them had access to quality veterinary care, and as such many suffered daily from infected wounds, cancers, and RTAs. Realising the difference she could make as a vet, just a few months later Janey found herself back in the country and WECare was born.
Nearly ten years on, the charity has grown from strength to strength. From Janey performing critical operations on the side of the road, to a solid team of vets, nurses, and volunteers working around the clock at the hospital in the south of the island. However, there is no way it could’ve got to this remarkable position without the generous donations the charity receives.
What is WECare’s Area of Focus?
As well as providing veterinary care to those in need, a huge area of focus is the CNVR (catch, neuter, vaccinate, release) programme. This is core to controlling the street dog population as well as keeping the dogs and community safe.
WECare also believes education is an incredibly powerful tool. It is important to get out into the community and spread the word. The charity’s outreach programmes range from working within the community to advise on animal-care best practice to educating tourists on the impact they can have during their visit to the country. WECare also uses UK-veterinary standards to train Sri Lanka’s next generation of doctors and nurses.
What is Their Impact So Far?
One un-neutered female can produce 27,000 puppies in a lifetime if her offspring continue to reproduce. So far, they have sterilised over 10,000 dogs thus saving millions of puppies from a life, often very short lived, of potential hunger, infection and accident.
