As the UK’s leading dementia research charity, Alzheimer’s Research UK are committed to making life-changing breakthroughs in diagnosis, prevention, treatment and cure. No-one has yet survived dementia, a condition that leaves people unable to think, move, or communicate with those around them. But the charity believes that investing in scientific research and uniting the people and organisations who can speed up progress will make these breakthroughs possible.

Dementia is a condition that affects almost one million people living in the UK. Worryingly, it is these people who have also been some of the worst affected by the COVID-19 pandemic, with one in four of those in England and Wales who died from the virus also having dementia. Sadly, the pandemic has caused a huge drop in funds and impacted the way the charity works. This means life-changing research will be put on hold and future treatments could face critical delays. However, this doesn’t mean the charity’s vision of a dementia-free world has come to a halt, as dementia research is still more important than ever before. 

Currently, there are no treatments to slow, stop or prevent the diseases - like Alzheimer’s - that cause dementia. However, research is already providing hope to people affected by diseases once thought as incurable, like Cancer and HIV/AIDS. History has shown us that these diseases can be cured. If other diseases can be treated, then so can the diseases that cause dementia. That’s why Alzheimer’s Research UK is on a mission to bring about the first life-changing treatment for dementia by 2025. But the charity can’t do it without your support!
