It’s that time again. Our May charity poll is live! And honestly? This one feels special.

Each month, I go through a long list of amazing charity nominations. I try to choose four charities that are doing very different kinds of work. Different causes. Different communities. Different stories.

This time… it just clicked.

This might be my favourite lineup yet. So I wanted to share a bit about each one. Not just what they do, but also why they stuck with me.

International Otter Survival Fund

There’s something undeniably special about otters; their playfulness, their intelligence, and their importance within aquatic ecosystems. But sadly, many otter species around the world are under threat due to habitat destruction, pollution, and illegal hunting.

Otters around the world are struggling. Their habitats are disappearing. Rivers are polluted. Some are still hunted. It’s a tough picture.

That’s where the International Otter Survival Fund (IOSF) steps in.

This remarkable charity works globally to protect and conserve otters. They work globally to:

• Protect otter habitats
• Rescue and rehabilitate injured otters
• Educate communities about conservation

Think of them as both first responders and long-term planners, protecting otters and helping to protect entire ecosystems — rivers, wetlands, and everything else connected to them.

Wood Street Mission

This one’s been on my list for a while and I’m really glad it’s finally in the poll.

Wood Street Mission is an amazing charity that has been supporting families living in poverty in the UK for over 150 years. Just pause on that for a second. 150 years.

And their work is simple. Practical. Ground-level. They work hard to provide key items and support for families in need. This may include things like:

• School uniforms
• Warm clothes
• Books and toys
• Holiday support

Why vote for them?

Because every child deserves the same opportunities, no matter their circumstances. Your vote could help a child walk into school feeling confident, included, and ready to learn. 

Brook Farm Animal Sanctuary

If you’ve ever had a soft spot for animals… this one will hit home.

Brook Farm takes in animals that haven’t had the best start. Horses. Goats. Pigs. Chickens.

These animals have been through a lot. Neglected. Abandoned. Sometimes worse. And Brook Farm Animal Sanctuary give them something simple. But powerful.

A safe place. A chance to recover. An opportunity to feel calm. To just exist without fear.

You know those before-and-after stories you sometimes see? The ones where an animal goes from scared and shut down… to relaxed and trusting? That’s what they do. Every day.

Slow progress. Quiet care.

There’s something really moving about that.

PEEK (Possibilities for Each and Every Kid)

PEEK works with children and young people across Scotland. And what stood out straight away was their focus on play. Not as an extra. Not as an afterthought.

But as something essential.

Because play is where kids build confidence. It’s where they learn to connect. To cope. To grow. They run programmes around:

• mental health
• outdoor activities
• family support
• youth development.

But it’s the stories that hit hardest. Nothing instant. No quick fixes.

Just steady, real progress.

And that’s what good support looks like.
