What Does Birmingham Dogs Home Do?

Birmingham Dogs Home has been helping dogs since 1892, meaning its roots in the West Midlands stretches over 130 years.

Today its teams help dogs 24 hours a day, 365 days a year. On an average day, 190 dogs can be in the care of the charity, with over 2,000 passing through its doors over the course of a year.

Some are strays, waiting to see if an owner can be found. Others have been abandoned or surrendered, and others have been the subject of abuse or neglect. Their health, age, temperament and previous experiences can vary enormously, meaning the care each dog needs is different. Providing essentials such as food and a safe place to sleep are only the beginning.

The charity provides veterinary treatment where needed, alongside behavioural assessments, training, exercise, play, enrichment and plenty of human interaction. Their team then works towards either reuniting lost dogs with their owners, or finding a suitable new home.

With roughly 230,000 meals prepared for dogs each year, even the every day side of running the charity is a sizeable operation.

Finding the Right Home, Not Just Any Home

Rehoming is a large part of Birmingham Dogs Home's work, but the aim is not simply to get dogs out of kennels as quickly as possible.

Each dog is an individual.

A lively young dog that loves long walks is unlikely to suit the same household as an older dog looking for a quieter life. Some dogs can happily live with children or other pets, whereas others need a specific type of home.

Birmingham Dogs Home assesses the dogs in its care, and speaks to prospective adopters about their household and lifestyle, before making a match. Dogs also receive health and behavioural assessments before rehoming. That process matters. Finding a home that actually suits the dog, gives an adoption a much better chance of working in the long term.

Support doesn't suddenly stop once an adoption has taken place either. New owners can access advice from the charity as their dog settles into family life.

What Happens When a Dog Needs Extra Help?

Not every dog arrives ready to be rehomed. A dog may be nervous around people, struggle in certain environments, have experienced neglect, abuse or past trauma or have had very little previous training. Others may need help building confidence after they had a difficult period in their lives.

This is where Birmingham Dogs Home's behavioural work comes in.

The charity has a dedicated Behaviour and Training Centre where dogs can be given more individual support. Training can involve positive reinforcement, carefully managed socialisation and helping dogs to be more comfortable with situations they currently find difficult.

Medical needs can be as varied. Some dogs require routine veterinary attention, whereas another may arrive needing treatment, medication or a longer period of recovery. Birmingham Dogs Home say it costs roughly £100 on average to care for one dog for a week, and that figure can be considerably higher when veterinary treatment is needed.

Multiply these costs across the number of dogs coming through its centres and it becomes quite easy to see why fundraising is so important.

Does Birmingham Dogs Home Receive Government Funding?

No. Birmingham Dogs Home receives no government funding.

This may come as a surprise given the number of dogs it cares for each year. Instead, the charity relies on fundraising and the generosity of people who choose to support its work.

These funds help with very practical things: meals, warm and safe accommodation, veterinary treatment, medication and behavioural work, plus the day to day care dogs need whilst they wait for what comes next. This also means that the public's support has a very tangible impact.

Birmingham Dogs Home Helps Owners Too

Something we found particularly interesting when looking into Birmingham Dogs Home is that its work isn't limited to dogs that are currently in their care.

The charity also tries to help owners before a situation reaches crisis point.

There are many reasons somebody may find themselves struggling to continue to care for their dog. A change in financial circumstances or a change in housing can affect how manageable the situation is. A dog's behaviour or health can also become difficult to manage.

Despite the name, Birmingham Dogs Home's work extends beyond Birmingham itself.

The charity has two rescue centres, its Birmingham centre is based at Catherine-de-Barnes near Solihull, and its Wolverhampton centre is based at Coven in South Staffs.

Together they support dogs and communities across the West Midlands and South Staffs.
