Help Butterfly Conservation Protect the UK’s Precious Butterflies and Moths
Beautiful, joyous, vital but under threat – butterflies and moths need your help. Vote for Butterfly Conservation in our November charity poll to help create a world where butterflies and moths can be enjoyed by everyone, forever.
What Does Butterfly Conservation Do?
Butterfly Conservation is the UK charity dedicated to saving butterflies, moths and our environment.
80% of butterflies have declined since the 1970s and moth numbers have fallen by a third in that same time. But these incredible insects are more than just beautiful, they are important pollinators, they provide food for other much-loved wildlife, and research even shows that watching them can make us less anxious.
To help ensure butterflies and moths are protected for future generations, Butterfly Conservation’s team carry out practical work on the ground conserving and restoring habitats across the whole of the UK. They deliver important research, provide expert advice, campaign for better protection for butterflies and moths, and help children and communities experience the joy of nature.
How is Butterfly Conservation Making a Difference?
Supported by 31 volunteer-led Branches across the UK and more than 4,000 volunteers, Butterfly Conservation delivers impact across these key areas:
- Restoring and conserving habitats – Butterfly Conservation is involved in conservation work for hundreds of sites, from woodlands to wildflower meadows. They support some of our most-threatened species like the Northern Brown Argus in Scotland, the Marsh Fritillary in Northern Ireland, the High Brown Fritillary in England and the Large Heath in Wales, as well as countless other butterflies and moths.
- Collecting vital data – Butterfly Conservation leads the world’s longest-running insect survey, the UK Butterfly Monitoring Schemes (UKBMS) which thanks to the incredible work of volunteers has counted more than 41 million butterflies.
- The Big Butterfly Count – Butterfly Conservation’s Big Butterfly Count is the world’s largest butterfly survey that asks citizen scientists to spend 15 minutes outdoors in a sunny spot counting butterflies and day-flying moths. The data gathered helps Butterfly Conservation get a picture of how butterflies are faring.
- Creating Wild Spaces – Butterfly Conservation creates spaces for butterflies and moths to thrive in schools and communities, giving people opportunities to connect with nature.
- Research – Butterfly Conservation scientists carry out world-class research in collaboration with universities and other organisations. From how light pollution
- impacts moths to how beavers can support pollinators, their research helps ensure their conservation work is backed by evidence.
- Giving butterflies and moths a voice – Butterfly Conservation speaks up for butterflies and moths to make sure they’re represented when the Government and other policymakers make decisions that might affect them – from pesticides to supporting butterfly-friendly farming.
How Will Winning November’s Poll Help Butterfly Conservation?
If you choose Butterfly Conservation to win November’s poll and receive 20% of our profits for the month, they could use the money to restore and conserve even more butterfly and moth habitats across the UK; carry out vital research to better protect butterflies, moths and the landscapes they rely on; speak up for butterflies and moths when policies might threaten them; and give even more people, young and old, a chance to connect with nature and experience the wellbeing benefits that brings.
