North West Cancer Research is an independent charity dedicated to putting the region’s cancer needs first, funding pioneering, life-saving research to tackle the cause, improve the care and find the cure for cancer. Across the UK, 1 in 2 people will receive a cancer diagnosis at some point in their lives and living in the North West and North Wales, people are up to 25% more likely to be diagnosed with cancer than elsewhere in the UK. Their mission is to tackle the toughest cancers which have the greatest impact on the region.
About North West Cancer Research’s Work
The charity has been at the forefront of world-class research for over 70 years and since 2000, have invested over £40m in supporting the best cancer research and education throughout the North West and North Wales.
From raising awareness and education work in the community, to leading ground-breaking research that unveils better and kinder treatments, they are working to achieve a cancer-free future for us all.
North West Cancer Research has over 50 active world-class cancer research projects across the North West and North Wales. These projects aim to understand and ultimately stop cancers that are most prevalent in these regions. As members of the Association of Medical Research Charities (AMRC), they only fund the highest quality research. Current projects include research into the mechanisms that play a role in the resistance of radiotherapy in head and neck cancers, while Blackpool has been one of the first sites selected by NHS England to develop the proposed national screening programme for lung cancer.
Cancer Education & Prevention
Education and community outreach is an important aspect of North West Cancer Research’s work. Through this, their work helps to inspire generations of future researchers, change perceptions of cancer and encourage early diagnosis. Their topical campaigns aim to raise awareness of risk factors and symptoms of certain cancers, while their work in schools introduces young scientists to cancer research through Lab Coat Learning. Additionally, they provide cancer education for the workplace, providing lab tours and wellness days tailored to give workers an insight into the research that takes place, as well as risk factors and symptoms of the disease.
