What is a learning disability?
A learning disability is a reduced intellectual ability and difficulty with everyday activities – for example household tasks, socialising or managing money – which affects someone for their whole life.
There are different types of learning disability, which can be mild, moderate, severe or profound. In all cases a learning disability is lifelong.
What challenges do people with a learning disability face?
Right now, people with a learning disability face inequality in every area of life. They face barriers finding a job, accessing activities in their local community and receiving good quality healthcare.
Only 6% of people with a learning disability are in paid employment.
50% of people with a learning disability experience chronic loneliness.
People with a learning disability are more likely to live in poverty.
