Eurotunnel or Ferry: Which Is the Best Way to Cross the Channel?

LeShuttle is usually the fastest way to take a car across the Channel, but it is not automatically the best or cheapest way to complete your journey. The best choice depends on where you start in the UK, where you are going in Europe, who is travelling, what you are driving, and whether speed, comfort or price matters most.

For Calais, Lille and much of northern France, the 35-minute LeShuttle crossing from Folkestone to Calais is hard to beat. Dover ferries take longer at sea, but they may be cheaper on your dates and give passengers a proper break outside the car. For Normandy, Brittany, the Netherlands or parts of Germany, a longer ferry can sometimes be the better route because it reduces the driving before or after the crossing.

Compare the whole journey, not just the crossing

The most common mistake is comparing LeShuttle’s 35-minute train journey with a ferry’s sailing time and stopping there. That only tells part of the story. A useful comparison should include:

• The drive from home to the UK terminal or port.
• Check-in, passport control and waiting time.
• The train journey or ferry sailing.
• The time needed to leave the terminal or port after arrival.
• The onward drive, including fuel, tolls and possible overnight stops.
• Passengers, pets, cabins, reserved seating and ticket flexibility.

A London-to-Lille journey will usually put LeShuttle and the Dover routes near the top of the list. A Bristol-to-Brittany journey is different because Folkestone and Calais can add substantial road mileage at both ends.

What is Eurotunnel LeShuttle?

Eurotunnel is the name many travellers still use for the vehicle shuttle through the Channel Tunnel. The service is now branded as LeShuttle. Drivers board a train with their vehicle at Folkestone, travel beneath the Channel and drive off at the Calais terminal.

You do not drive along a road inside the tunnel. Your car, motorcycle, van, motorhome, caravan or trailer is carried on the train. LeShuttle describes the crossing as taking approximately 35 minutes and states that a vehicle booking can include up to nine passengers. The operator sets out the current service details on its official Eurotunnel information page.

Luggage stays inside the vehicle, so there is no airline-style suitcase allowance. Vehicle dimensions still matter: a roof box, trailer, caravan, bicycle rack or unusually tall vehicle must be entered correctly when booking and may affect the fare.

Is LeShuttle faster than a ferry?

For the crossing itself, yes. LeShuttle has the shortest scheduled vehicle crossing between Britain and France. The important qualification is that the 35-minute figure only covers the train journey between Folkestone and Calais.

You still need to reach the terminal, check in, pass through border controls, wait for boarding and leave the terminal after arrival. Ferry passengers go through the same broad stages, although the sailing itself is longer.

LeShuttle is therefore most likely to be the fastest total journey when Folkestone and Calais are already convenient for your route. If you are starting far from Kent or heading to western France, a ferry from another UK port may produce a shorter or easier door-to-door journey.

How early should you arrive?

There is no single check-in time for every Channel crossing. Always follow the deadline in your booking confirmation and allow extra time during school holidays, weekends and busy travel periods.

LeShuttle requires Advance Passenger Information for everyone on the booking before arrival and says this should be completed at least 24 hours before travel. Its guidance for passengers with restricted mobility and for pet check-in states that travellers should arrive no later than one hour before the booked departure. Check the current LeShuttle pre-travel checklist before travelling.

Ferry deadlines vary by operator and route. P&O currently states that check-in for Dover–Calais closes 90 minutes before departure. DFDS and Irish Ferries publish their own deadlines in booking confirmations and travel guidance. Missing a deadline can mean being moved to another departure or paying more under the ticket conditions.

Is Eurotunnel cheaper than a ferry?

Neither option is permanently cheaper. LeShuttle and ferry fares change according to demand, date, route, trip duration, passenger numbers, vehicle dimensions and ticket conditions.

LeShuttle sells several ticket types rather than one universal fare. Current prices and inclusions are published on the official LeShuttle tickets and fares page.

At the time of this review, LeShuttle advertised eligible Day Trip & Overnight fares from £69 per vehicle each way for travel up to 30 September 2026. This is a restricted starting fare, not a typical price for every journey. The £100 shown in the visual above is illustrative, not a live quote.

• Outward and return fare.
• Vehicle category and complete dimensions.
• Passenger numbers.
• Pets and their required accommodation.
• Cabins, lounges or reserved seating.
• Amendment and cancellation conditions.
• Fuel to the UK terminal.
• Fuel and tolls after arrival.
• Food, rest stops and overnight accommodation.

Build the journey you actually need before applying a voucher code. A bigger-looking discount is not useful if it pushes you towards an inconvenient route, unnecessary cabin or unsuitable sailing.

Dover ferries compared with LeShuttle

The closest ferry alternatives to LeShuttle are the Dover-to-Calais and Dover-to-Dunkirk routes. LeShuttle keeps passengers with the vehicle during a short train crossing. On a ferry, passengers leave the car deck and can eat, walk around, use facilities and take a break from driving.

Dover to Calais

DFDS lists Dover–Calais at approximately 100 minutes. Irish Ferries also operates the route and publishes its current schedule on the official Dover–Calais page.

P&O Ferries also operates Dover–Calais. It lists a typical crossing time of approximately 90 minutes and currently advertises multiple daily sailings. Include P&O alongside DFDS and Irish Ferries when comparing the completed fare, departure time, vehicle and ticket flexibility. Dover to Dunkirk

Best route by destination

Calais, Lille and northern France

For a journey such as London to Lille, compare LeShuttle from Folkestone to Calais, DFDS or Irish Ferries from Dover to Calais, and DFDS from Dover to Dunkirk. LeShuttle provides the shortest scheduled crossing. A driver trying to minimise interruption is likely to favour LeShuttle; a family wanting to stop, eat and walk around may prefer a ferry.

Normandy and western France

Travellers going to Normandy should compare Newhaven–Dieppe and Brittany Ferries routes with LeShuttle and the Dover ferries. Brittany Ferries connects Portsmouth, Poole and Plymouth with Caen, Cherbourg and Le Havre. Current routes are shown on the official ferries to France page.

Brittany

A family travelling from Bristol to Brittany should compare LeShuttle or Dover–Calais with Portsmouth–St Malo, Poole–Cherbourg and Plymouth–Roscoff. The south-coast sailing takes longer than LeShuttle, but it may remove substantial road travel in Britain and France. An overnight crossing can also replace a hotel, although the cabin must be included in the fare comparison.

France is not always the right arrival country. For Rotterdam, Amsterdam and parts of Germany, Harwich–Hook of Holland can be more logical than crossing to France and driving through Belgium.

Stena Line currently advertises day and overnight sailings, with crossing times starting at approximately six hours 30 minutes. The operator publishes the latest information on its official route page.

Can you take Eurotunnel to Paris?

LeShuttle does not take cars directly to Paris. The vehicle service ends at Calais, and drivers continue to Paris by road. This matters because searches for “Eurotunnel to Paris” can make the service sound like a direct city train.

For passengers travelling without a car, Eurostar is the direct rail alternative from London to Paris. For motorists, compare the LeShuttle fare and Calais-to-Paris drive with ferry routes and the complete journey from home. Fuel, French tolls, traffic and any overnight stop can change the result.

Eurostar is not Eurotunnel

Eurostar and LeShuttle both use the Channel Tunnel, but they provide different services. Eurostar operates passenger trains between city-centre stations and does not carry private cars. LeShuttle carries vehicles between Folkestone and Calais.

Ordinary foot passengers cannot arrive at LeShuttle and buy a walk-on ticket. Travellers without a vehicle should compare Eurostar with ferry routes that accept foot passengers.

Travelling with a dog, caravan or roof box

On LeShuttle, pets remain with their owners in the vehicle during the train crossing. Ferry arrangements depend on the vessel and route: a pet may remain in the vehicle, use a kennel, travel in a pet lounge or need a pet-friendly cabin. Add the pet when booking and check the documentation and check-in deadline before travel.

Caravans, motorhomes, trailers, roof boxes and bicycle racks must be entered with the correct total dimensions. A booking made as a standard car may be repriced or moved if the actual vehicle needs a different carriage or deck space.

Final verdict: should you choose Eurotunnel or a ferry?

LeShuttle is the best starting point for a fast car journey to Calais, Lille and nearby northern France. Dover ferries are still worth comparing because they may be cheaper, offer a better departure time or give everyone a break from the car. For Normandy and Brittany, do not treat Calais as the automatic arrival point. A longer ferry from Newhaven, Portsmouth, Poole or Plymouth may save enough driving to make the whole journey easier. For the Netherlands and parts of Germany, Harwich–Hook of Holland should also be considered.

Before booking, answer three questions:

1. Which UK terminal or port is practical from home?
2. Which European arrival point is closest to the destination?
3. What is the final cost after the vehicle, passengers, pets, cabin, flexibility, fuel and tolls are included?

The best Channel crossing is not always the shortest crossing. It is the one that gives you the best complete journey for your route, budget and passengers.
